To earn this title shot Spinks reeled off five straight victories beating fighters such as Ezzard Charles and Tommy Loughran. This was after losing to a prime Tiger Jack Fox. Spinks has previously held the WBU title and made seven defences. Spinks also knocked out every fighter he came up against in the Harry Greb tournament.
