Kerry Kayes?
Ok, we know Kerry did not have a lengthy amount of time to say the least to work with Guzman so Kerry cannot be blamed, or blamed solely for Guzman failing to make weight. The fighter has a responsibility aswell.
However, 9lbs is a lot to be over-weight. I mean, Jose Luis Castillo was 3 & 5lbs respectively, overweight for his rematch & scheduled rubber match with Corrales. That puts into perspective, or should do, just how much 9lbs is to be overweight!
I heard Guzman dropped a lot of weight the day before the weigh in? If so, how much weight? I would be surprised if this was the case, as I've always thought Kayes does not have his guys do that, & that they are hydrated & monitored by Kerry!
Action needs to be taken against Guzman because its taking the piss. Credit to Funeka for fighting on, but no doubt he only did so because he wanted his purse for the bout!

Re: Kerry Kayes?
As i stated on an earlier thread,Kerry is first and foremost a bodybuilding man,in fact, one of the most respected in the world.I havent got a clue what happened here, but some of the blame has got to go to Beard, stood laughing while his fighter is over half a stone heavier?Piss take to be honestRocky Balboa wrote:Ok, we know Kerry did not have a lengthy amount of time to say the least to work with Guzman so Kerry cannot be blamed, or blamed solely for Guzman failing to make weight. Re: Kerry Kayes?
Diet and Nutrition is not rocket science. I personally think Kerry's help bring the best in Ricky in other aspects, not just the training plan. Any Welsh Rugby fans remember Steve Black. Now, as someone who has studied Diet and Nutrition, Physiology and Sports Psychology quite extensively - what he used to say of note ON THE JOB could have been written on the back of his hand and was frankly a waste of money. However, he brought alot of other things to the Welsh team, like rapport, and team building. I think it is THAT, more so than the technical information Kerry said (not suggesting he was wrong or not needed, just that it something that can be self managed after designing a training/diet plan) that Ricky missed.
As for Lee Beard, I am really fascinated how he has fast tracked to some high profile fighters, really interesting how he does when a young amateur signs to work for him.

Re: Kerry Kayes?
Fair post.I have met Kerry and wasnt casting asperstions on him at all.Lovely bloke. He gave up time to give a friend of mine(free of charge)great advice.I just think you cant get away from the fact he is a Bodybuilding man!Absolute polar opposites! To be produced on stage when you are barely able to walk, compared to when you have to do 12x3s against a superfit kid who wants to take your head off
Re: Kerry Kayes?
It would depend on the boxers intelligent levels and self discipline. Designing a Nutritional plan and implementing a training schedule is something that could be done over the phone, via an email or in a single meeting.
Really, if the boxer is intelligent and discipline enough, a nutritionist/training scheduler, isn't needed THROUGHOUT the camp. Just really at the beginning. Really the fighters trainer, or the fighter himself, should be overseeing if things are on schedule.
Critical that a schedule is implemented early. Having it 3 weeks before a fight is taking the piss, quite surprised Kerry took the assignment on. Well, probably got well paid, but its unfairly done his reputation no good.

Kerry wont have done it for the money. He is wealthy enough.I also know for a fact he has turned down payment when offered for advice.stujones wrote:It would depend on the boxers intelligent levels and self discipline. Re: Kerry Kayes?
Firstly Kerry would not be involved with any fighter for financial gain.
Secondly Kerry can only advise, help and assist. He's not exactly gonna knock a fighter up in the morning and say "right, get on the scales"
If Kerry is being told a weight from a fighter then he accepts that weight and advises accordingly. Why would he doubt the fighter, he is there to help!
"You can take a horse to water...." That sums Kerry up for me.
He is THE most knowledgeable man in his field in my opinion, his supplements are the best on the market(again in my opinion and MANY others) and his help is priceless.

Re: Kerry Kayes?
Somebody with Kerry's experience would've seen it coming. He should have ended his involvement and saved himself a bit of professional embarrassment. Hopefully he won't get too much of the blame.
Re: Kerry Kayes?
Not necessarily so.... I've seen fighters with a good 7lb to go looking "on weight"housesecond wrote:Somebody with Kerry's experience would've seen it coming. He should have ended his involvement and saved himself a bit of professional embarrassment. Hopefully he won't get too much of the blame.
As I said earlier Kerry is there to help, he's the only man you'd say "$hit I'm X - lb over what do I do" - Then he could help or advise against.
I don't know anything of the fight/weigh in or facts but I could put money on Guzman NOT telling Kerry his true weight.
Re: Kerry Kayes?
kerry doesnt do it for the money he does it because he wants help people out hes that type of bloke, kerrys expertise in nutrition is unquestionable he is known all over the world for his knowledge, kerry works with all different athletes footballers, boxers, kickboxers. bodybuilders rugby players and even darts. this probably not done his reputation much good but he was only drafted in with a few weeks to go its effected lee beards reputation more. i find this electric sauna suit rumour strange as fcuk ive never heard of one of them before if that was the plan to sweat 20lbs off the day before what i disaster

Re: Kerry Kayes?
Questions must be asked of the team behind a fighter who at the age of 27 years (i.e fully grown) was fighting at 122lbs but now cannot get near 135lbs. I'd love to hear an interview with Lee Beard and his take on the matter. I mean 144lbs is just ridiculous. 9lbs over is a joke and reeks of unprofessionalism. You'd have to assume they never intended to make weight with Guzman being over by so much. You could understand if he was a young guy who was still growing like the Filpino Marvin Sonsona who failed to make weight for a superflyweight bout because he grew 2 inches taller. He must like his food when not in training. I know when at superfeatherweight he used to come in the ring at 147lbs, so in that regards he's somewhat like Manny Pacquiao in that he's a big drainer.
Annoying thing is he's got talent to burn and he's wasted a lot of his talent on inactivity. He's still got time and I always said if he got his act together he could give some of the very best guys in the sport a very good run for their money.

I once had the most fantastic conversation with Kerry Kayes in Jersey - he truly is a top man who loves the sport and whats more thoroughly enjoys helping people within the sport - some of the kids Kerry sponsors in boxing do not have a pot to p*ss in and would have to get a job if it were not for Kayes geneoristy!!!
Re: Kerry Kayes?
I'm glad to see a thread solely adressing Kaye's (and Beard's) role in this scandal is up and running and has not been merged.
Lee Beard laughing on the stage as Guzman weighed in is unforgivable IMO. It was a disgraceful act and taints his entire reputation, at least in my view. As the head trainer he should be held fully accountable, but Kaye's must also take some blame. It does not matter that he was only brought in with three weeks to go, he obviously knew what was going down (or not, excuse the pun) and obviously did not object to it or he would have walked away.
Ali Funeka is the big loser here, he ought to take a closer look at the people advising him. For his own safety and wellbeing he should not have been allowed to fight, anybody advising him otherwise probably had other interests. He surely would have one the fight had Guzman worked his way down to 135lbs.

Will agree with you there - that was simply not good at all.ALI wrote:Lee Beard laughing on the stage as Guzman weighed in is unforgivable IMO. It was a disgraceful act and taints his entire reputation, at least in my view.
Re: Kerry Kayes?
Wonderful, thanks for sharing that with us (i'm sure if Ali Funeka catches wind that he'll feel a little better), but can you explain what on earth it has got to do with his involvement in the Guzman scandal?Spud wrote:I once had the most fantastic conversation with Kerry Kayes in Jersey - he truly is a top man who loves the sport and whats more thoroughly enjoys helping people within the sport - some of the kids Kerry sponsors in boxing do not have a pot to p*ss in and would have to get a job if it were not for Kayes geneoristy!!!
Re: Kerry Kayes?
Just out of curiosity, as i have only seen photographs, did anyone notice if Kaye's also smirked at any point during Guzman weighing in? Not trying to dig the guy out or anything, just curious to know if he joined in on that act?Spud wrote:Will agree with you there - that was simply not good at all.ALI wrote:Lee Beard laughing on the stage as Guzman weighed in is unforgivable IMO. Re: Kerry Kayes?
Is too much being made of the one photo where Beard and Guzman appear to be laughing? Maybe someone cracked a joke about Joan having a smaller pecker? I'm sure they all realised the seriousness of being so overweight, and shouldn't be judged on one photograph.
Re: Kerry Kayes?
Or perhaps someone just photoshoped a smile on their faces? The picture tells it all, i dont care if Kaye's let rip with a roaring fart right at that moment, the seriousness of the offence should have seen Beard remain solemn faced.dbf wrote:Is too much being made of the one photo where Beard and Guzman appear to be laughing? It was a piss take, thats what it was. I'm certain they knew what they were doing all along, they had to!
Re: Kerry Kayes?
KO2, Im not having a go as such, but reading scales isnt hard. Anybody would know a week before the Fight that it wasnt going to happen.

Didn't mean anyone particular - but, be good to see their progression. He's worked with some high profile fighters and coaches for someone so young - it will be good to see how he will do with someone from scratch.acenabox wrote:stu Jones wrote "As for Lee Beard, I am really fascinated how he has fast tracked to some high profile fighters, really interesting how he does when a young amateur signs to work for him."

Hope he does the business, it will be great to see a Britain among the most respected coaches in the world.
Re: Kerry Kayes?
Kerry is a personel friend of mine, and he is without doubt the most knowledgable man in nutrition for sportsmen here , but as he says, you can take a horse to drink, but you cannot make him drink it, , its the same everywhere, you can ask a boxer if he has done his roadwork and he says yes, you have to take his word for it, even tho he might have been shagging a bird instead, you cannot moniter a guy all the time..
I know of a few fighters that dont tell the truth about training, including some boxers that was in a night club the day before a title fight!!!
If Kerry advises you, you take that advice and use it, dont cheat on it........
