Re: Dempsey vs Liston, primes
It would be a great fight. Tt takes more than fights vs Cleveland Williams to convince me that no-one could beat Liston coming at him. Dempsey at his best had VERY quick feet and Liston would be getting hit with some BIG shots in the early going. At the same time, Liston's jab would be the most dangerous Jack ever faced.
When forced to pick in these fights I say the boxer wins over the swarmer more times than not, especially when the boxer has the durability and punching power of a peak Liston.

Liston in one sided fashion, mid to late stoppage.

Some match-ups play out in a strange way. In all the years I've followed our grand sport, I've never been comfortable picking a winner in this fight, &, for some reason, I have a difficult time imagining them in the ring together. Stylistically, I really can't get a good hold of it.dempseyfire wrote:It would be a great fight. Either man can certainly knock out the other, though --- & the fact that both could take it as well as dish it out makes for a firecracker of a skirmish.

A near pick em fight, but I think Dempsey's quickness and heart are enough to give him a slight edge.
Re: Dempsey vs Liston, primes
Liston would beat up Dempsey pretty bad, though it might take some time.
p.s. No disrespect to the great Dempsey with my opinion. He would definitely have some moments against Liston. I just think that Sonny would be too strong and Dempsey, with his style, would wind up taking some real punishment.

Liston's jab makes the difference. I think Dempsey would wobble Sonny but end up out cold.
Re: Dempsey vs Liston, primes
I think Liston would have been shocked by the ferocity of Dempsey. It would have taken him a couple of rounds to adjust and find his range.
Liston would look clumsy in the first 3 rounds, but; would overwhelm Dempsey by the 5th on sheer brute strength.
