Boxers who were cnuts to interview
Boxers who were cnuts to interview
Personally Ive never come accross a boxer that was too difficult to interview or speak to, although there must be some out there. I interviewed Michael Gomez when his stablemate brian Rose was fighting once, that was a bit mad. It was in the run up to the Johannesson fight, and Mike was off his box whilst shouting "whack him bri" between every other sentance. Aside form that Ive never had any difficultly. has anyone on here had any problems, or know of any interesting anecdotes.
I do recall the very same Michael Gomez making Terry Dooley high five him using their shins during an interview.

Re: Boxers who were cnuts to interview
I spoke with David Haye, Nigel Benn, Junior Witter and Johnny Nelson and all were very approachable. Haye is just as articulate in a one to one conversation with a fan as he is on TV - a very likeable bloke. Alan Minter comes across as more intimidating than any of these guys and allegedly seems to be always ready to argue.

Re: Boxers who were cnuts to interview
Mikey was always high voltage entertainment.
There was a guy trying to interview him straight after the weigh in for the Khan fight, and he wanted it to go out live.
Mikey's trainer had a word in his shell like, and they decided to do a dry run.
It was hilarious !
Swearing, going mental, the whole works !
Interviewer explains he just can't do that live so they do another dry run.
Calm for all of 5 seconds then off he goes again !
In the end they just cut their losses.

Re: Boxers who were cnuts to interview
I heard part of the deal for Gomez fighting Khan was mike was to be kept on a elad for the weigh in etc... no headbutting or startign a ruck. I believe thats true as I can almost guarentee that would have been Mikes idea of getting inside the young lads head.

Don't know if that's true mate but it was a quality weigh in to attend.
Amazing thing is only an hour later he was as calm as anyone, back in the hotel.

Re: Boxers who were cnuts to interview
I asked Kendall Holt for an interview, he said send him the questions.
A couple were:-
Amir Khan has now entered the running at the 140lb weight class with his win over Kotelinik, how would you see a fight between yourselves panning out? your power vs his natural speed and ability ?
Answer: "Yes."
Ricky Hatton has indicated he will be returning in June with a fight possibly in Manchester. His last show in his hometown drew 55,000 and was a huge success. Would you like to throw your name into the mix for that one and how do you think you'd handle the 'hitman' ?
Answer: "Not fighting in his hometown. Tell him no"

Gomez is one of a kind... Absolutely barking mad on one hand, and a good lad on the other. He's one boxer I really miss. Sparring, training and going to fights with him was a right good laugh. Cracking lad... Mad as you like, but some fighter.
Re: Boxers who were cnuts to interview
Mikey still scares the piss outta me.
I run the other way when I see him.
Don't know why.

Tyson was bizarre, intense and exhilerating, and Calzaghe - once he got going - was warm and open, as most are, notably Mooresy, Gavin Rees et al.
Witter was ok, so was Hatton, and my all-time fave is Shavers, closely followed by Froch and Mick Jennings. The latter is a true gent, while Carl is gold, at least he was last time I spoke to him, ahead of the Pascal fight.

Bradley Vs. Nate Campbell claiming that he caused the cut with a punch whilst the footage of the huge headbutt was being shown on the big screnes in the arena.
I can never like Bradley after that. It was totally classless.

I always remember Howard Eastman's interviews and thinking how difficult it must be to interview him.

Clinton Woods seemed a tad bored by the whole interview thing. Not in a rude way, he was polite and a gentleman. He just seemed like he had been there 1000 times before!!
Tom Doran will never say ten words when one will do...lovely, lovely fella but very grounded, doesn't go in for soundbites Lets's his fists do the talking. If he did anything else he would be false.

Disagree mate about him being boring or bored - f*cking wicked sense of humour - he loves "working" people and having a giggle himself.thepocketrocket wrote:Clinton Woods seemed a tad bored by the whole interview thing. With regards other fighters sometimes its not the fighters but those around them who are the c*nts - time and time again I have seen fighters more than happy to talk for an interview to be scuppered by an over zealous "Team" member.

Re: Boxers who were cnuts to interview
Barry McGuigan in his house my first ever interview with a fighter. His wife Sandra opened the door and she seemed really nice. 'He'll be down in a minute' and I was stood in hallway waiting for him then he cam down the stairs. Felt like one of his opponents must have as they waited to get to the ring.
He invited me into his kitchen, made me coffee, offered me breakfast (I refused, was far too nervous), he had a whopping bowl of All Bran with a banana chopped into it. Remember his hands were bloody huge!
Despite not having much time he granted me a full hour and we went over old times, how he didn't train in a boxing gym at the time in case he 'got any stupid ideas' and he'd just finished training Daniel Day Lewis for the film The Boxer. Was a very good interview and he was extremely professional.
Harry Simon was interesting. Didn't really interview him, just chatted for a bit. Such a quietly spoken guy and then he goes and turns into a drink-driving nutjob.
Earnie Shavers was nice too. Said he didn't really like boxing, but enjoyed competing. Considering how he is labelled the most destructive puncher in heavyweight history by some, expected him to be bigger.
Can say same thing about David Haye, who chatted to ringside at Wembley Conference Centre (night Williams lost to Sprott – who'd have thought then Haye would be where he is now?). Like you see on TV. Articulate and seemed very down to earth.
Jim McDonnell's always a good chat too.

I think he left the chips in the ring at Bethnal Green after Paul Burke trounced him.DIRT SUGAR wrote:Suppose can't say any boxers I've interviewed or met and chatted too were tossers. LOL! Eastman was class. Who knew what he was going to come out with next. I'm not sure if he was playing up for the cameras, or if it was real....?jameswilson wrote:I always remember Howard Eastman's interviews and thinking how difficult it must be to interview him.
