im not a trainer but what ive done with my son it has worked for us. we trained for a year and we did about 2-3 sparing per week. i did not let him fight till we thought he was ready it took a long hard year before he got his first bout. in your case your 16yrs i dont know when your going to be 17. my son is 14yr 143 very strong and has very good speed it took a long time for him to develop but we are doing good. always believe on your self and your skills never be afraid of your opponent and never show it. my son has been in the ring with 24yr and has done very good. dont be afraid of a number or how someone is built. the way people look and age dont matter in this sport. you can look like a bodybuilder and it dont mean anything in boxing. i think if you havent been in the ring yet let me know how you do it will mean a whole lot... it will let you and your coach know if you have what it takes to prevail in this sport. and if your coach dont try to get you sparring you need to go out and look for work. and always try to spar with better skilled opponents you will learn from your mistakes and become better. atleast thats what we did and know my son is whipping them lol... about what age you think is a good age to start well i belive no one has that answer because look at martinez he just beat pavilk and he started boxing at a late age then you have delahoya and he started at an early age. so like i said age doesnt really matter once you became an open fighter. hope i could help

16 is a good age to start. Train hard and listen to your coach. Don't rush it. Take your time and learn the basics very well before moving on to more advanced skills. A boxer with a good jab, good stance, footwork and defense will often defeat a boxer with more skills, but weaker basics.

16 year olds can't box anyone over the age of 17 and can only box a 17 year old at a local show. So you won't have to worry about older opponents until you turn 17. I applaud your coach for training you at least six months before your first competition. And I'm sure he'll have you spar when he thinks your ready. No need to worry - sounds like you're in good hands. :D

Once you turn 17, you can box anyone from 17 to 34. Since you will start out competing in local shows, your coach will be very careful to match you with opponents who have the same experience level and who are probably closer to your age.

It depends on his maturity level. If he is a physically mature 17 year old (once he turns 17), then he will do fine no matter what the age of his opponent - late teens, early twenties, mid twenties, etc. If he is lacking physical maturity, then age will play a bigger role.

Listen to your coach if he's keeping you away from sparing it's for a reason when he considers your ready he will make the decision don't go looking for sparing elsewhere,NO1 you will piss off your coach NO2 how sick will you be if you don't perform

I would say around 13 or 14. Thats when kids start getting serious about playing sports. It wouldn't be bad to start before that though.
