YURI ROMANOV, WHERE ART THOU?
Two frickin years since I was at the York Hall and watch a cool, calm and clinical dissection performed on the big swinging Jon Thaxton by Dr Yuri Romanov of Belarus who looked absolute class.
Since then, in the absolute peak years of his career, the man has completely vamoosed.
Thaxton, his victim, picks up his euro belt. Then some underwhelming french bloke Mezaache messes Thaxton out of it. Now, against all logic, John Murray boxes a Welsh fringe contender for the belt.
Can ANYONE give me any info on where Yuri is?

Re: YURI ROMANOV, WHERE ART THOU?
overhand you haven't been doing your lightweight homework!
yuri's promoter was supposed to have an option on WBA champ paulus moses, but nothing came of it. then he was going to fight fernando angulo or someone like that, for i believe the IBF title. he couldn't get his visa or whatever, fight was off. guzman and funeka got the fight, funeka got robbed, guzman came in 9 lb overweight in the rematch, won narrow decision, funeka tests positive for something illegal...no sign of yuri.
is he willing to go back down to euro level?

I emailed his ex- manager Philip Fondue and he replied saying that Yuri turned down some fights he had arranged, then had moved to America to further his career there.

I think Autobarn's is a gruyere assessment of the situation. Romanov has brien missing for a while now, I for one am cheddar up of the situation, Romanov is hardly a boursin fighter, he has the heart of a camembert and overall just a very gouda fighter.Philip Fondue

FWIW i think Romanov would BRUTALISE John murray.
Re: YURI ROMANOV, WHERE ART THOU?
i've studied romanov and i think murray would be too much for him.
romanov would be in awful trouble coming off inactivity. if earl can do it, murray can.
an active romanov is a different proposition. but i think murray could push him back and take away from romanov's power. you can never tell what would happen - romanov really can punch - but i reckon murray would rise to the challenge. his infighting skills are really impressive, he can box better on the outside than ppl think, and his physical strength is massive at lightweight. romanov has a very classy look about him, but he is a bit short for a lightweight, and he is one of those precise fighters who don't like working at a pace.

Re: YURI ROMANOV, WHERE ART THOU?
i should say, i think a fully prepared. fit and sharp, Romanov, beats Murray.
Re: YURI ROMANOV, WHERE ART THOU?
Tough call, Barney. Romanov looked so good against Thaxton, that on that performance it would be hard to bet against him. Murray has always been very easy to hit, so I believe it would be a completely 50/50 fight. If Romanov produced the clinic again, and hit Murray with those surgical shots, would Murray lose? I think so. But on the other hand, Murray against Meager looked nearly as good. Tough one.Autobarn wrote:i've studied romanov and i think murray would be too much for him.
The Murray that fought Meager and the Romanov that fought Thaxton. Who'd ya pick?
Me, I'd say Romanov.
Re: YURI ROMANOV, WHERE ART THOU?
if he aint got a promoter wouldnt be surprised to see hatton or warren sign him,
as for murray v romanov be a very hard fight to call but think murrays constant pressure would be the deciding factor in the fight

Re: YURI ROMANOV, WHERE ART THOU?
Murray's penchant for eating punches combined with Romanov's accuracy & heavy hands would decide matters. Remember Murray got a gift against Al Hamidi & struggled with the Mexican journeyman on the Hatton undercard!! So he's been whacking the usual British suspects, Romanov is levels above these men.
Only chance Murray would have is the same as Graham Earl, taking Romanov straight off one of his unfeasibly long layoffs & nicking a close points nod..
Have that you biased british fight f'cks!

Re: YURI ROMANOV, WHERE ART THOU?
murray stuggled with the mexicans and al hamidi because he was unmotivated look at his 2 biggest fights meager and thaxton he performed at his best, the better the opponent the better murray will be

Re: YURI ROMANOV, WHERE ART THOU?
But Thaxton was old & shot whereas the Mexican and Al Hamidi were young, willing hard b@stards. Lee Meager, if that's a big win after 8 years as a pro that's very poor.
I haven't seen the skills or adaptability in John Murray that Kevin Mitchell has shown, I think he will be found out in his first proper fight. All these years of treading water won't have done him much good either.

Re: YURI ROMANOV, WHERE ART THOU?
Mr Overhand, it wasn't the fact that Murray beat Meager, it was how. It's not the best win on paper but if he brings that form into any fightm against anyone, then he will do well.
That fight showed he has world-class potential.

Re: YURI ROMANOV, WHERE ART THOU?
murray was poor vs hamidi and the mexican but they weren't gift decisions. he was a stale fighter unhappy with the way his career was being promoted, and when he got his opportunities he delivered. showed himself to be well above the british level, stopping 4 guys who were in the EBU top 10 and earning ring mag and WBC top 10 rankings. in these fights murray showed excellent strength, body punching and infighting skills.overhand_right wrote:Murray's penchant for eating punches combined with Romanov's accuracy & heavy hands would decide matters. you talk about levels, but romanov did lose to a british fighter, earl. romanov was dropped and outboxed by melero until finding one big punch. the same melero who was blown out by thaxton. and as bad as murray was vs hamidi, have you looked at romanov vs stefano zoff - i doubt you'd say he was world class after that. so romanov is "levels above"? and even if he was, are you so sure that murray can't rise to the challenge, if given the opportunity?
also, re murray eating punches. well, i've not seen him ewat the flush head spinning shots that kevn mitchell used to eat in commonwealth title fights, that he also eat in just about every round vs carl johanesson. as to mitchell's adaptability. FW brought prescott over after a defeat, brought him down from light welter. mitchell did well, but if i was being unkind i'd say he ran for 6 rounds and hit mostly gloves for the next 6 rounds.
Re: YURI ROMANOV, WHERE ART THOU?
i'd go for murray. most ppl overlook his offensive skills and the fact that he blocks shots. he would be absolutely primed for combat if he was fighting someone like romanov. murray is bigger and fitter at the weight than romanov. romanov does not like to fight at a pace. of course romanov would get some great shots through, but he doesn't punch so consistently through 12 rounds and struggles at a pace.Dioufy wrote:Tough call, Barney. also, murray is probably growing as a fighter whereas we've seen the best of romanov.
Re: YURI ROMANOV, WHERE ART THOU?
If Murray were to win, then I believe he would have to wear Romanov down. IMO, he would eat shots right, left and centre, like against McAllister. And one thing I know for certain, Romanov would hurt Murray a lot more than McAllister could. Murray may block some shots but he likes to eat a lot too, and against someone as precise as Romanov, then that could spell trouble. But like you say, Romanov is so inactive, so if they fought in three months I would give the edge to Murray, but a fit, strong and active Romanov could cause him untold problems, before stopping him midway through the contest.Autobarn wrote:i'd go for murray. most ppl overlook his offensive skills and the fact that he blocks shots. he would be absolutely primed for combat if he was fighting someone like romanov. murray is bigger and fitter at the weight than romanov. romanov does not like to fight at a pace. of course romanov would get some great shots through, but he doesn't punch so consistently through 12 rounds and struggles at a pace.Dioufy wrote:Tough call, Barney. Re: YURI ROMANOV, WHERE ART THOU?
i believe romanov's class is one thing, but his shortness and lack of stamina is the trade off.
murray's big at the weight, throws accurate shots himself (though maybe not as pinpoint as yuri's), has a powerful jab, and a good variety of power shots. he's a stronger, fitter fighter than romanoc and i believe would beat him.
no doubt SOME on here will be hoping murray doesn't look so hot vs buckland.

Re: YURI ROMANOV, WHERE ART THOU?
Sorry Barn man but you lose any credibility with stupid statements like these. Yuri Romanov 'lost' a razor thin debatable decision to Graham Earl after he was coming off a SIXTEEN MONTH LAYOFF. The only reason he was in the ring with Earl is because Team Earl knew how rusty he would be.Autobarn wrote:you talk about levels, but romanov did lose to a british fighter, earl. romanov was dropped and outboxed by melero until finding one big punch. the same melero who was blown out by thaxton.
Re: YURI ROMANOV, WHERE ART THOU?
ok then mr credibility, so explain the melero fight, in which romanov was having his ears absolutely boxed off, in which he was dropped, before finding the one big punch to stop melero. thaxton knocked him out easier. so this levels stuff is not as cut and dried as you think.overhand_right wrote:Sorry Barn man but you lose any credibility with stupid statements like these. and how do explain romanov's razor thin debatable win over the ordinary stefano zoff, a fighter no better than the dane that khan beat.
basically you've called me stupid, lacking credibility, and a biased british fight fvck. probably without considering some of the finer details re romanov's career.
Re: YURI ROMANOV, WHERE ART THOU?
I was told that Don King won the purse bids for the IBF title fight, then said he couldn't afford to put the fight on unless they boxed for nothing. They refused and the IBF scrapped the match.Autobarn wrote:overhand you haven't been doing your lightweight homework!

Right then, Godfather of Dole.
Who wins from the Murray that bashed up Meager and the Romanov that beat the living shite out of Johnno? Don't answer like a politician. Just a name and a means of victory.
