Danny Williams' last stand: in-depth interview

Post by Lightsoot »

http://news.boxrec.com/news/2010/brixto ... -interview

I've always had a soft spot for the big men, so I was grateful to Danny Williams when he generously afforded me his time recently to look back on his career. I do lean towards Chisora winning on Saturday but I hope Williams performs creditably and I'd like him to cause one last shock.

Great little interview there, Danny is very lucid, candid and realistic about his career. I was particularly interested to hear him say what he did about the fight with Klitchsko.

He's clearly under no illusions about how much he has left to offer, but believes whatever is left, is enough to beat Chisora.

It may just be enough, I favour Chisora, but not by a great deal.

I hope Williams gets his fighting head on one last time and beats Chisora.

Danny's a nice guy in a nasty bastard's sport who happened to be blessed with some real talent. Sadly he's not made it count on some occasions when he really needed to (Francis I, Sprott III, Klitschko and Harrison II in particular). No doubting his 'Marciano heart' but if only he'd had Marciano's attitude. Hope he goes out with a win and not on his shield. Good servant to the sport and you couldn't wish to meet a nicer guy.

I think he will have one good performance left in him, but I still think it won't be enough to beat Chisora (who for all his sh!t is a good fighter). I think Chisora will stop him late with it very tight on the cards

I thought Danny would push himself for one last hurrah and getting back with Mcdonnell was a great move to get himself in shape. But read in boxing news that he has split with his trainer again. He says its because jim was making him get up early but you can only take it as jim has told him he is not in good enough shape to fight and he is going to anyway for the money.

Think its going to be on his shield

I don't think he could ever have beaten Vitali, like he said himself, he just didn't realise how good the big guy was. He may be ugly and clumsy to watch, but he's incredibly effective, and very hard to hit cleanly, that equals nightmare, when combined with his size, strength and punch power.

he has a marciano heart, but not a marciano mentality.

adam smith summed him up perfectly during the second mcdermott fight.

"i saw danny williams pacing up and down outside his hotel and went up and asked him if he was ok. he told me he just didn't know which danny williams was going to turn up tonight against mcdermott".

That kind of honesty is very refreshing. I think I have become a Danny Williams fan.

No but that's what I mean, he didn't even mount a challenge to Klitschko because I don't think he's ever really had the inner belief to make the most of his talents. Plus, Danny's always been too heavy and slow of foot to become champion.
