The Mitchell fight and stoppage

First time I have seen this sinse watching it live. Interesting that they say "allegedly is furious with the stoppage"- what else could the ref do? Mitchell turns away.

It was a fine stoppage. A rare moment when Dave Parris did a good job. Mitchell had just been buckled by a left hook and was having his head smashed in by a Katsidis right hand as he turned his back. It was clear to me that he wanted no more and as neither Mitchell nor his corner protested, I have the feeling they had no issues with the intervention either.

Good stoppage. Mitchell was trapped, no defense, taking big shots etc.

Mitchell got hurt early in the round and did OK until the stoppage. He was actually keeping Katsidis off him well and the movement was good. he was standing and throwing more and actually doing well even though he was hurt. His problem was that he made a cardinal mistake of staying on the ropes. Look at the stoppage, he tries to stay with his back to the ropes and roll with some punches, without throwing back. This was his fatal decision as far as the fight went. Katsidis saw his opportunity and took his time to line Mitchell up for a power left hook, which effectively ended the contest. If Mitchell stays moving instead of getting on the ropes voluntarily at that point, the fight becomes interesting in my opinion.

if he hadnt been trapped on the ropes he might have gone over... he would have had a KD to deal with but that aint the end of the world.

bottom line tho i reckon Katsidis would have done it to him again at some point

I don't think Mitchell meant to turn away, I think it was the punches which helped him in that direction when he was trying to slip on the ropes.

The mistake he made was dropping his right hand and allowing the left hook to land. He would of been fine to lean against the ropes as long as he kept his hands up, or leaned into Katsidis.

Easier said than done though.

He should never have been on the ropes in the first place. Tibbs specifically told him that in the corner. He made a conscious decisions to stay on the ropes, he wasn't trapped there. He was there for about 10 seconds before taking the left hook. Not a good decision by Mitchell and I bet he knows that now.

he was too f*cked up to even think about doing that. :KO:

if the ref had let him get pummeled into the ground he'd got no end of criticism for it.

excellent officiating from mr parris. :TU:

he was hurt and instinct kicked in.

that was to bang back with katsidis.

he should have got round that ring and tried to clear the cobwebs.

shame it happened so early in the round.

cos he had a good start i thought.

won the first 2 rds for me. :box:

To be fair he was still shaky and hurt, and probably wasn't thinking clearly at that point.
I doubt he made a concious decision at the time, to go to the ropes cause that'll be the best way to deal with Katsidis.

He clearly didn't "turn away" - he was near pole-axed and would have gone over without the ropes. Perfect stopage by the ref. He should have grabbed hold earlier of course, but he was too stunned to think clearly, and his instincts were too fire back, which suited Katsidis perfectly.

To be fair to Dave Parris he timed the stoppage perfectly.

Was a very correct stoppage, Mitchell was about to get pummeled into a hospital bed if it continued, he was defenceless and taking bombs.

I have finally managed to watch the fight. :TU:

Couple of things stood out for me - especially reading other peoples views on the fight. :-?

Mitchell was doing excellent in the 1st 2rnds... :TU:

Katsidis was backing away in the early rounds which must of threw Mitchells game plan off somewhat... :-?

Mitchell defence/hands were alot lower than Katsidis - this seems unusual when you think of Katsidis with the lack of defence.. ;;-)

When Katsidis turned it on, it was clear Mitchell could feel Katsidis extra strength ... and boy did he look sorry for himself.. :(

I think the ref did an excellent job. Mitchell has for the best part of his career had size and strength advantages over his opponents. Against Katsidis he clearly didn`t, and he looked frightened for his life in there .. it was quite pityfull how sorry he looked for himself.
I think the ref stopped it at the perfect oppurtunity. Sometimes fighters and all too often - their corner ;;-) are too brave and allow a guy to take too much and get ruined for the future.

I think Mitchel can, and will come back from this. Maybe at a lower level. But I think the ref has probably helped him more than he realized.

As for Khan v Katsidis :-?
Whats the point?

Katsidis without his strength is 3/4 of what makes him. The step up will probably make his strength less noticeable against naturally bigger guys.

Yes, thats true- I'm not suggesting he turned away as a deliberate or calculated act. Perhaps "Mitchell was in a position where he was not facing his opponent" is a better phrase than "turned away."

Just that once a fighter is in that position (unless through an obvious slip or push or wrestle,) what else can a good ref do?

Had he stopped the action and requested that the fighers move to the middle and face each other (which sometimes happens) and box on it would have been a shocking decision.

There is no point in Katsidis moving up in weight. He can make 9stone 9 pounds easily.

Michael comes from a family of small people. His brother Stathi is a very good jockey.

This is why Mitchell, despite being undefeated, was always up against it. Good match-making, if you want to build up a fan base and get into the rankings, bad if you come across a decent champion. They figured Kaitsides was there for the taking (which most of us probably disagreed with).

Well done Michael, feel alittle bad for Kevin, he is a decent bloke, but Warren is Warren, fighters dont improve under him, they make money. Which is. I suppose, what its really about.

Good stoppage by Paris. What was with Mitchell shoulder rolling like Mayweather (but too little effect) in the first two rounds?
