Boxing barmy
Boxing barmy
Lennox Lewis, who dominated and then flattened Mike Tyson in the eighth round of their 2002 encounter, is still suing Tyson for breach of contract because a rematch never materialised. Tyson, already in debt to creditors for more than $27 million, is being sued by Lewis for $20 million.
Lewis has asked a bankruptcy judge to liquidate the former heavyweight boxing champion's assets.
Tyson filed for bankruptcy in August.
Lennox is out of order here. The proposed rematch was always a joke, given the one-sidedness of their first fight, and Lewis had no right ethically to demand Tyson honour the rematch clause in my opinion. Since when does the winner demand a rematch with the loser! Since boxing went barmy. It's greed, greed, greed.

LENNOX LEWIS IS A BIG TIME fornicating PRICK!
Lewis's career has owed a large part to his Lawyer's ability to get deals in his favour
Stopping Tyson from a much needed tune up fight and forcing Rahman to defend his title against lewis were 2 that made me SICK!
btw bennie, do u mind if I copy your post and take it somewhere else?

Although I do agree with Bennie on this, it is bizarre and ethically I can't see how a victor can demand a rematch with his vanquished opponent. Surely the clause is there to protect him if another Rahman had happened. When Lewis went to court to chase the rematch I supported him as they were going to freeze him out big time but chasing a rematch with Tyson is just plain silly.

If this is true, then I just lost whatever tiny bit of respect I had left for Lewis as a person. What a f***ing asshole. And all the while the WBC plays along - he'll never be forced to give Vitali a rematch, and instead is looking for a cheap payday against a guy he already humiliated once. Great going, Lennox.

Lennox Lewis is a C***
He should be ashamed of himself.
Lennox Lewis is a discrace to boxing, a disgrace to sports and a disgrace to mankind.
Talk about hitting a man while he is down.
Lennox is showing his true colours here - Yellow.
He's trying to get one big payday, without fighting again.
I say to him GTF out of boxing now.
YOU FRAUD
YOU ARE LOWER THAN A SNAKES BELLY.
I would love to see James Toney whip Lennox's phoney ass.
He should be ashamed of himself.

Is James Toney now the big American pipedream?
It really doesn't take much to get the anti-Lewis WWF/Tyson fans getting all out of their prams again does it?
It's cool because a few years ago they used to try and dress their hatred up with logical reasoning as to why Lewis would be beaten by Tyson/Holyfield/Tua/Grant/Rahman e.t.c and why he wasn't all that good.
After being utterly frustrated by that route it's just all out childish abuse which IMO suits the morons far better.

Surely Lewis will only get what he's entitled to? It's not his fault if Tyson has blown millions of dollars and is in debt up to his eyeballs. Boxing is littered with cases of once great fighters ending up in dire financial straits because they didn't know how to deal with their money and all the characters who wanted to take it away. And everyone just looks at them struggling and says "Poor fella. He should be rich right now.."
Don't knock Lennox too much for being one of the smart guys.

Was Lennox the Canadian/Jamaican/British pipedream?
On his passport application form I bet they have to have a special one made up for Lennox with an enlarged nationality box, so he can write in
"Any country where I can exploit the fans desperation for a Heavyweight Champion".
Fair enough, but it is going a little bit over the top - the guy earned close to 30 million for the fight. Also, it may have a bit hard for Tyson to take the fight when Lewis is so undecided on his career.Kilburn wrote:Surely Lewis will only get what he's entitled to? Tyson DID put forward the application for a rematch (something Hamed never did), but Lewis, at least never publicaly, didn't signal his intentions of whether he was boxing on or not.
No, I'm not some moronic Tyson fan, just think LL is going over the top. Marco Barrera could have done exactly the same thing to Hamed, but chose not to. I know which fighter I respect more on this occassion.
I know Lewis took offense (rightfully so) at some of Tyson's mad comments at him. However, I think I would still struggle to have the conscience to sue a broken man for millions.
These two pieces of litigation have nothing to do with boxing and everything to do with contract law. Both the Tyson/Lewis and Lewis/Rahman contracts have re-match clauses in - Lewis/Rahman grants a re-match to Lewis if he loses (I have seen a copy of the contract), Lewis/Tyson (which I haven't seen, purportedly states either party can demand a re-match within a specified period, and if that right is requested, neither fighter can fight anyone else first).
One may think that these terms are unfair but no-one forced Lewis, Rahman or Tyson to sign these contracts - but if, having taken legal advice before signing, you try and wriggle out of them afterwards, you can have no complaint on being sued for breach of contract.
