George Groves vs Alfredo Contreras on JMM/Diaz Undercard
George Groves vs Alfredo Contreras on JMM/Diaz Undercard
Confirmed on GeorgeGroves.com.
Looking at Contreras' record, it shouldn't be too hard a challenge for Groves to step up to.
Anybody know anything about him?

Never seen Contreras but looking at his record he is a decent enough fight for prospects. He's not a bad opponent because of the fact he is not over the hill and he is a natural super middleweight. Can't find any fotage of him

Only video I could find is of Craig McEwan giving him a bit of a battering...

Should be a decent test for Groves. But one I expect him to come through with flying colours!

Re: George Groves vs Alfredo Contreras on JMM/Diaz Undercard
Easy fight for Groves against a name the Yanks will know. Smart promoting.
Re: George Groves vs Alfredo Contreras on JMM/Diaz Undercard
all but one of his defeats have been to unbeaten fighters, so he is not a total pile of poop.
Re: George Groves vs Alfredo Contreras on JMM/Diaz Undercard
It's a good fight for Groves at this point. As mentioned, Contreras has only lost to solid fighters but he does not really pose a major threat. This match will give Groves the opportunity to look good in front of an American audience against an opponent who isn't a total scrub.
A guy who posts on this forum manages George Tahdooahnippah (record below). A recent post on the current scene got me thinking about a George vs George fight. This would be an easy win for Groves over an American guy with a "great" record. Tahdooahnippah has also fought on T.V. several times and is more well known than the likes of Contreras. Not sure what Groves opponents are making, but maybe they can find enough money to convince Tahd that it's time to cash out.

Groves should be fighten our domestic lads likes of dilks,or Anderson, not hand picked Americans.
Re: George Groves vs Alfredo Contreras on JMM/Diaz Undercard
I agree, but it wouldn't hurt to have a few more fights in the States against Americans or fighters who are relatively known there. It would help Groves gain a lot of exposure outside the U.K.. Doesn't mean he can't fight Dilks, Anderson, etc.bigdaddy wrote:Groves should be fighten our domestic lads likes of dilks,or Anderson.

Put him in against David Lemieux, now that would be some test. The guy is a wrecking ball. Great left hook.
He has 23 wins undefeated with 22 KO`s. The competition is not the best, but there are some decent names on there.

Lemieux really impresses me, the guy looks like a killer. I always think "Pah, he doesn't look like he hits that hard" about a nanosecond before he flattens someone with a shot from nowhere. Good combination puncher with a nice rhythm & impressive ability to switch body/head/body. Also: a proper middleweight, rather than a bloody light-heavy on a diet. As to Groves' opponent: GG will do him. Be interesting to see how long it takes him, though. As someone said above, Contreras is a decent measuring stick that Groves will deffo beat.

His manager, Bobby Dobbs, is a regular poster on the Current Scene.
Re: George Groves vs Alfredo Contreras on JMM/Diaz Undercard
Commonwealth super-middleweight champion George Groves makes his American debut on the undercard of the Juan Manuel Marquez-Juan Diaz lightweight showdown in Las Vegas on July 31. Groves takes on Mexico's seasoned Alfredo Contreras in an eight-rounder.
The unbeaten Londoner lifted the Commonwealth belt in Manchester in April when he became the first man to stop Ghanaian iron man Charles Adamu, who had gone 12 rounds with messrs Carl Froch, Otis Grant, Isaac Chilemba and Carl Dilks, among many others. Groves, still only 22 and having just his ninth pro outing, was punch-perfect as he floored Adamu three times before the finish in round six. The former double ABA champion served notice of his intentions in a talent-laden super-middleweight division in this country. He looks a great addition.
To Contreras, who has battled it out with some decent names in a six-year pro career and is unlikely to roll over. You know, these US excursions are always fraught with danger for visiting fighters. I can remember when canny old Andy Smith took over a pair of unbeaten lads, Robert Smith and Joey Joynson, and watched them both get 'done'. Neither fighter was ever really the same, although Smith came back to give Lloyd Honeyghan a decent enough fight. Honeyghan himself really struggled in a couple of fights in the States before he came good, spectacularly, against Don Curry. More recently, an unbeaten John O'Donnell was smashed in two rounds in Las Vegas by an unheralded Mexican.
Contreras is battle-hardened yet still only 25 and should not be underestimated by the talented yet brash and inexperienced Groves, who has waltzed to victory so far. Contreras took another big British prospect, Craig McEwan, the full eight rounds back in 2007 in Las Vegas and big-hitting Anthony Dirrell seven rounds last year before he was stopped, the younger brother of Andre.
Trained by Adam Booth of David Haye fame, Groves can expect a long, educational night on the way to a points win.

mate- doesn't Lemieux remind you of a Hilton brother, style and attribute-wise?Datsue wrote:Lemieux really impresses me, the guy looks like a killer. Yes, mate now you mention it he does remind me a bit of Matthew Hilton. It's still early, but he's a bit less wild-looking, keeps the punches shorter & I think has a better defence. But he comes forward in the same way, doesn't he? Do they have the same trainer? I do think Lemieux is better on his feet than Matthew was, he seems to have better balance, but it remains to be seen if he can carry the power up to the true elite level.
I heard Davey was the best of the brothers Hilton, but I've never seen footage of him, just Matty against Antuofermo, (the remains of) El Radar & Buster Drayton, so I'm going on that.
I've no idea if he will get as far as Matty H., but I'd like to keep an eye on him -- he can't really fail to be exciting, fighting like that. & so young, too.

Re: George Groves vs Alfredo Contreras on JMM/Diaz Undercard
I think it's a really good opportunity for Groves, to box in Vegas on one of the biggest events of the year.
The opponent's record doesn't flatter him, I'd wager that he would probably teach some of our top 10 a lesson and probably beat some of them..... plus if Groves gets a good 8 or 10 rounds in (like he did in Germany) it bodes well for him.
After this I'd like to see him do more of the same assuming a fight with neither Smith/Magee/DeGale can be made - competing against tough opponents away from your home fans is certainly more valuable than a couple of routine Commonwealth title defences that he'd have here.
Sometimes we focus too much on winning titles rather than actually improving a boxer's education (this is true for all fighters and not just the top prospects like Groves) - and it ought to be corrected.
We need to get rid of this silly masters titles, and just have area (or English/Scottish titles - but not both) then the British and European. Stop allowing lads to fight for interalphabetty titles and get rid of the Commonwealth while we are at it. Promoters just use it as a tool to push two lads at the same time, when they ought to be matching them up against each other.

yeah, haven't seen much of Lemieux but the bits I've seen strike me as vaguely Hiltonesque.
I think it's the commitment to their punches that strikes me as most similar.
Re: George Groves vs Alfredo Contreras on JMM/Diaz Undercard
Mickey Duff, who managed the huge-punching Drayton, admitted before the fight that he didn't have a clue who was going to win, and Hilton came good in a 15-round thriller. Weightmaking, and lifestyle problems, ruined Hilton quite quickly.Datsue wrote:& thinking about it, Lemieux could rock the patented Hilton mullet too.
