Francis Barrett, Irish Traveller

Post by HomicideHenry »

He represented Ireland in the 1996 Olympics, going 32-7 in his first match, and losing his second match 13-4. He won the ABA (?) British title in the amateurs and almost won the Irish title as well. I know very little of him, but considering I love all things gypsy and boxing, I was wondering if he ever turned professional. Whatever happened to barrett?

he did box professionally; his record is on boxrec. he has not fought for about 5 years after losing on a cut. there was a documentary made about the lad and he came across well. he boxed in decent company but didn't have the power to really get to title level, (though he was skilled and aggressive enough). don't know what he's doing now.

There is a film about him, the name of which I cannot remember now. It was an excellent portrayal of his life as a traveller mixed with his boxing life. I seem to remember he led out the entire Irish Olympic team in Atlanta.

Just been looking at some old notes I have on Barrett, and he busted up in a lot of fights and was physically strong but lacked snap in his punches. The cuts forced him out of the game.

17-3-0 isnt too shabby a record at all, considering he won the EBU title

It was the second-tier EU title, Homicide.

Oh, my mistake. Still, his story is an excellent one.
