Liverpool Echo done big piece earlier this week but a lot of focus up here is on Martin Murray's battle against Mitrevski.
Re: Derry Matthews returns on Oliver Harrisons Salford bill
Anyone know who Derry is boxing ? Any rumours ?
Re: Derry Matthews returns on Oliver Harrisons Salford bill
Derry says on his fbook that he's fighting Kristian Laight, although Laight is down to fight T Dwyer on the card.

Broughton is a pretty rough area in Salfordwhicker wrote:Where is broughton? Boxrec says Broughton, Lancashire, although the Broughton I know is just an ara north of preston, no venues there or anything.

Serioulsy who in the right mind would want to see this match ? My manager said to me after one loss you have had your chance / shot its time for others to have there's. To many fighters that are up and coming or just past it having it to easy in my opinion. I'm not refering to Derry, just in general within the UK. Lots of fighters about with Taylors, Allens, Laights x2 etc on the record. Just don't see this contest been any good for either fighter. Nothing can be gained form Derrywinning or even if Laight won he would probably lose the following week to a debutant. Would like to see more even bouts in the future for me to keep an interest.

Too many of our journeymen are being recycled over and over and over.
A lot of them were capable of upsetting someone off form over 6 rounds in their day, but these days struggle to take a round off even the most average of prospects.
It's those average prospects that are really journeymen - like Horton (I know he's packed in now) and Renda etc.
Some of them have ten times as many losses as wins.... a proper journeyman should win a quarter of his fights, preferably more. We need more Komjathy's and Augustus's rather than Nesbitts, Roystons and Greavess'
Re: Derry Matthews returns on Oliver Harrisons Salford bill
True, it doesn't look like a very competative bout, but fair enough, it's just for him to get back into it.tijuana1 wrote: Serioulsy who in the right mind would want to see this match ? What I find more alarming is that whole shows are made up of bouts like this.
Re: Derry Matthews returns on Oliver Harrisons Salford bill
Yeah- guys like Tony Booth.LeedsLad wrote:Some of them have ten times as many losses as wins.... a proper journeyman should win a quarter of his fights, preferably more.
Guys who REGULARLY won bouts, rather than just chalking up endless losses.
There are two boxers fighting tonight who have NEVER won a bout http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... &cat=boxer http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... &cat=boxer
possibly the board of control should just take an interest, and say "look, this IS meant to be a competative sport, please lets see some more even match ups for these fighters."
Re: Derry Matthews returns on Oliver Harrisons Salford bill
Yeah, Booth was a good fighter - it was only in his last couple of years that he began losing nearly all the time.... in his earlier years he only lost to good opponents.
I bet Booth would be unbeaten if he'd faced David Price's opposition so far.
I like fighters like Bull as well, who basically beats anyone that isn't up to title standard.

Booth was a natural light-middle!He was a journeyman in every sense of the word, going to Africa and boxing in Belgum on Christmas day!He was knocking Cruisers/Heavies cold later on in his career.A very tough man.LeedsLad wrote:Yeah, Booth was a good fighter - it was only in his last couple of years that he began losing nearly all the time.... in his earlier years he only lost to good opponents.

I hope Derry can get a few confidence boosters under his belt, hes still young enough to come again. Obviously the chins a worry but as I say thats where a few confidence boosting fights will come into play. No need to rush and I dont think he will be rushed.
Come on Derry lad, lets get the show on the road again.

Hes not being rushed though is he?Thats the point.Laight is regulary beaten by debutants.Noones saying Derry should be back at title level, just a slightly better first opponent.Scouse Fight Fan wrote:I hope Derry can get a few confidence boosters under his belt, hes still young enough to come again. Re: Derry Matthews returns on Oliver Harrisons Salford bill
Derry Matthews launches a comeback tonight in Salford in a humble four-rounder against Nuneaton journeyman Kristian Light.
Matthews, a former Young Boxer of the Year and outstanding domestic featherweight, saw his world fall apart when he was pounded in five one-sided rounds by Oldham's rugged but ageing Choi Tseveenpurev in 2008 in Bolton. The rangy Scouser, 20-0 going in, went down five times from Tseveenpurev's body shots. It was the start of a dismal run that led to his brief retirement last November but, now up at lightweight and trained by ex-pro Oliver Harrison, "Dirty" Derry is hopeful he can string a few wins together and make his mark again.
Still only 26, Derry holds big wins over John Simpson and Steve Foster, and he was outboxing current Britsh featherweight champion Martin Lindsay before walked on to a cracking left hook in the ninth of a 10-rounder.

I never said he was being rushed by fighting tonights opponent.mickey1975 wrote: Hes not being rushed though is he?Thats the point.Laight is regulary beaten by debutants.Noones saying Derry should be back at title level, just a slightly better first opponent.
Its got to be a grass roots level restart for Derry. Hes still a very young lad with a fair few fights behind him. Hes got to be rebuilt and given the confidence back that has been destroyed over the last few years. I'm not saying the lad tonight is a great fighter, but he has only been k.o'd 4 times in his 79 defeats and most importantly not stopped anyone (Boxrec career stats, you gotta love them)
Tonights show isn't for our entertainement, its for Derrys rehabilitation from what has been a disastrous few years. I think he will have been hoping tonights show would have went totally under the radar and go unnoticed. But Derry Matthews being who he is its arousing interest.

Re: Derry Matthews returns on Oliver Harrisons Salford bill
its been said before, but with Derry at 135lbs, his problem may be he was used to bullying people at FW and he won't be able to do that 9lbs up in weight
plus, he may as well have a sign round his body saying 'please hit me down here i've been susceptible in the past', which may not mix well with some of the more rugged types at lightweight.

Re: Derry Matthews returns on Oliver Harrisons Salford bill
Hopefully the extra weight helps him with his resistance, but am sceptical.
The first decent, big man Derry fought, was Lawton, and we know what happened there.
I hope they progress him nicely, get the fire back in him. He's got a big fan base and always provided great nights.

What time is the first fight?

His chin also has such a sign on it. Hopefully, Derry just needed a break.Counter-puncher wrote:its been said before, but with Derry at 135lbs, his problem may be he was used to bullying people at FW and he won't be able to do that 9lbs up in weight
