Most Pathetic Corner Work

Post by jrc26 »

What are some of the worst jobs you have seen done in a fighter's corner before? Whether it cost them a fight, bad advice, no advice, or just pure stupidity.

The 3 Stooges in Tyson's corner against Douglas.

Danny Williams corner against Klitschko

Any corner Yoel Judah has ever been in.

Meldrick Taylor's corner telling him he needed the 12th round against Chavez, which lead to the "TKO".

i think kesslers corner in the ward fight wasnt great.....all i heard from there corner was "go at him" and "do you want us to stop it?".

In fairness to Taylor's management, they'd been around the bright lights of Vegas long enough to know what happened to fighters beating King's men & not finishing decisively...I can see why they were worried, & wanted Taylor to close impressively.

Thats a very fair point G.I.
Didnt Duva and co. go through that with King when Pernell Whitaker was robbed against Ramirez prior?

The bigger problem I have with Taylors people was throwing Meldrick in with the bigger Terry Norris.
He was predictably thrashed and kod.
I dont even see how they thought Taylor was gonna be competitive against Norris.
That fight has always pissed me off.
Especially given Meldricks condition these days.

What about Tysons corner vs Buster Douglas?? Tysons Eye had swelled like mad and the corner was without an iron to reduce the swelling which obviously impaired his vision in the bout so they got a balloon!!

Also Norman Stone is so busy argueing with the referee half of the time than giving his fighter instructions or helping motivate him

Deano Clavet in Stephane Ouellet's corner between the 1st and 2nd rd against Sheika.
All he told him was: (translation from French) You're doing good, you're beautiful, you're recovering well, you look good.
Ouellet answers I feel good only to get KTFO in the 2nd.

Yeah, I know. I remember watching and being surprised by how easily Diaz was handling Katsidis. He boxed the man's ears off in a way one normally wouldn't expect from a high-volume fighter and I was thinking "Damn, Diaz virtually shut him out", so I (and my friends and fam who were over watching with me) was extremely surprised when it came out as a SD.

Angelo Dundee in Pinky Thomas' corner against Mike Tyson. His pyschotic exchange with the Doctor between rounds was hilarious.

"Leave him alone!!! God damn it, leave this fucken man alone! Jesus Christ! Get away from this man!!!"

Sure, not having a proper pack to stop the swelling was bad, but if you actually listen to Bright's advice to Tyson during the Douglas fight, he was giving him EXACTLY the correct advice, Tyson was just not executing.

my votes:

just about any of the 'work' Jack Mosley did for Shane during his losing efforts. utterly, utterly pathetic.

Enzo Calzaghe's insane incomprehensible gibberish early in the Hopkins fight

teddy atlas when michael moorer boxed evander holyfield and he sat on the stool and asked moorer if he wanted atlas to box holyfield. some feel that this was a master of psychology; i think he was jealous of moorers' time in the limelight and craved the attention. moorer won the fight but that is the moment that stands out for me. atlas is a very good trainer but wants to be seen on a stage the same as the heavyweight champion.
