Drew Docherty come back
Re: Drew Docherty come back
He is also listed at Light Middleweight on Boxrec, even though he never fought above Super Bantam. Very worrying if he's now going to fight at Light Middle.

Wow blast from the past, so long as he gets the win and doesn't get hurt will be well pleased to see this guy fight again in a nostalgic way.

Gave john lyon a couple of tough fights many moons ago in the abas
Re: Drew Docherty come back
No way. Docherty suffered a nasty knockout at the hands of Michael Alldis in his last fight many years ago, after a long career, amateur and pro. I'm not trying to make myself look smart here, Tommy, but the great John Lyon beat Docherty four times, including the fantastic ABA final in 1988 when Lyon set the record for the most ABA titles won in history.

James Murray was the poor fella who lost his life, god bless him
Re: Drew Docherty come back
Yeah, I didn't mean it to come across like that. Lyon beat Doc for the first time in '84 at light-fly, then again in '86, '87 and 1988 at fly. They would have fought again in 1989 but the Scots walked out of the ABA semis in a protest over headguards. The Murray night was one of the most sickening in the entire history of British boxing, far worse than Eubank-Watson, as rivals fans clashed with Murray stricken on the canvas. It was Johnny Owen all over again.Tommy Gunn13 wrote:Im not saying he beat him Bennie, ran him close on couple of occaisons i believe...bennie wrote:No way. Yes and the great Mark Epton beat them both i think.bennie wrote:No way. Re: Drew Docherty come back
Epton beat Lyon and Doc in the same ABAs (1985). He was a monster that year but never quite looked as formidable again, in my opinion.fightacademy wrote:Yes and the great Mark Epton beat them both i think.bennie wrote:No way. Re: Drew Docherty come back
Pulled out a few videos of Lyon yesterday. Watching this guy is a clinic in how to win amateur boxing contests - nothing flash as he bangs in straight shots and the occasional left hook to the body, never falling in afterwards but skipping back, just out of counter-punching range, and then immediately on to the front foot with the straight shots again, five, six, seven at a time, maintaining the pace, no clinching, no bugging the ref, always jumping to the centre of the ring if he is too near the ropes or corners...
