Classic Fights not given enough credit

Post by Chris W 1982 »

We hear all the talk of Gatti-Ward, Barrerra-Morales and Corrales-Castillo but what fights from the modern era do people think deserve more credit?

I'll start

Miguel Cotto-Ricardo Torres
James Toney-Vassiley Jirov
Kelly Pavlik-Jermain Taylor
Carl Froch-Jean Pascal
Lennox Lewis-Vitali Klitschko

I immediately thought of Toney-Jirov and Vitali-Lewis (both are great fights)

Most of Glen 'the Roadwarrior' Johnsons fights

Abraham v miranda
moore v macklin
mclellan v benn
moseley v mayorga

I forgot that one. They had a rematch, right? Was it the rematch where Rigby just walks up to him and says ok fair dos, no more, you've won.

Shea Neary was rarely in a bad fight - The Malinga, Scheepers (saw that live), Holigan and Ward fights were pretty good.

bantamweight standout veeraphol sahaprom vs toshiaki nishioka parts 2, 3 and 4. especially in lieu of nishioka's excellent recent form for the WBC title at 122. bruising fights.

pongsaklek wonjongkam v daisuke naito 3 and 4. wonjongkam won the first two fights easily, but naito went on to become a big attraction in japan, got home advantage and took advantage of a listless wonjongkam in fight 3. an entertaining battle. wonjongkam goes mad after finding out he's behind after 8, goes all out for the KO, lots of exciting late exchanges. fight 4 was really tough as well, though wonjongkam seemed unlucky to get only a draw.

going back to the late 90s, joichiro tatsuyoshi v singwangcha is a stunning all out slugging match for the WBC bantamweight title, and wayne mccullough v jose luis bueno was an exhausting 12 round battle (on big fight live), with mccullough putting on massive pressure and bueno picking some absolutely savage counters.

Naz V Kelley

The fight and the winner dont get enough credit.

Naz, turmoil in the camp, nervous as hell, entrance goes wrong, fighting a guy 47-1 in his own back yard, knocked on his arse 3 times.

Still KO's the man in 4 rounds

Naz showed massive balls that night and I dont think he gets the credit he deserves for that fight, instead people try and discredit Kelley as an opponent when he was a top 3 featherweight at the time

The HBO commentary was class - Larry Merchant 'Whooaaa' when that final left hook lands.

George Foreman - 'the prince is for real'

The look on Kelley's face when trying to get up realising what he had been hit with.

It was a memorable night

dariusz michalczewski v roberto dominguez-perez. dm got careless, as he did vs some of his lesser challengers. got dropped and wobbled early. turned it round with a stunning left hook dropping the challenger flat on his back.

DM vs barber was high quality, lots of skill, power punches - DM's jab a power punch in itself, vs kronk fighter barber's long right - and fiercely contested throughout the tough 12 rounder.

I've never seen it, does it exist "on tape" anywhere?

I have some of his other fights on tape but not that.
