Kevin Bryant (August 6, 2010 Update)

Post by williefromrichmond »

This is an updated, expanded, corrected revision of Kevin Bryant’s record originally posted on this Forum on September 14, 2009.

KEVIN BRYANT

Born April 21, 1959

Bronx, New York, and U. S. Army

6’ 1” 156-165

Began boxing 1978

Had “100-something fights” as of May 17, 1987

COMMENTS: “One of the best but ... sometimes forgotten boxers from the 1980’s or any other era (probably because he never turned professional) was ... Kevin Bryant, who fought for the U. S. Army by way of The Bronx, New York. Bryant at 156 pounds, at six foot one and carrying power in both hands, was a legitimate threat to any light-middleweight in amateur history, including a guy by the name of Roy Jones, Jr.” By Iceman John Scully.

In the thid, Amantine dealt a hard left to Bryant’s head, causing a standing eight-count. Then Bryant took the offensive, forcing Amantine to the ropes, but referee Al Robinson penalized Bryant for ducking. Then came the decision. ‘I won, I won.’ Bryant said breathlessly in the lockerroom. ‘I gotta give myself a pat on the back. I deserve it. I wanted it. The strategy was to stay on his butt the whole fight. If I had stayed away, he’d probably had outboxed me. I workd to the body, slowed him down. When I got tired, I reached in for more because it was Amantine.’ Said Amantine, ‘I’m shocked by the decison, not by the fight. I should have won. In the last round, he had the standing eight and had points taken away. That should have put me on top. I was going for the knockout. Brewer then came out aggressively in the second round, landing a straight right and going into a clinch with Bryant. The two traded blows, with Bryant connecting to the head and body. Brewer was gushing blood from his mouth after the second round, but came out boldly for the last one. Bryant concentrated on his mouth and Brewer worked on the body. Bryant opened up Brewer’s nose, then knocked him down with a left hook.
