Has Delaney bottled it?
Has Delaney bottled it?
There's talk that Garry Delaney may have bottled his Southern Area title fight with David Haye scheduled for Friday night. I'm hearing rumours that he's pulled out with shingles.

GITR, nice to hear from you.get in the ring wrote:Garry Delaney and Peter Oboh (scheduled to face Elvis Michalenko) have pulled out of Friday's bill.
Any ideas on, who they will bring in for Haye, if anyone?
I hope its Mock again, but really not sure. I hope its someone decent but I doubt it. I think Rob Norton would be very winnable but a bit over ambitious at this stage.
I can envisige the Delaney being stripped of his belt and Haye fighting for a vacant title.
How ya' doin, Elliott? What a nightmare scenario. Both Delaney and Oboh out. The York Hall must be jinxed at the moment with Bruce Scott and Allan Gray also pulling out of fights there scheduled for a few days later on the 18th. Gawd knows whom they'll bring in for Haye. I don't envy his matchmaker.

Yeah it's a real shame. Both fights were interesting.
Good call about Mock. The wild African slugger came in at only a couple of days notice last time, and I can't imagine him kicking up a fuss if he was asked to do the same again. I seem to remember him calling out Haye of late anyway. That would, I imagine, be a straightforward fight to make.
Norton, as you said Stu, would probably be a step too far for Haye at the moment, and I can't see that fight coming off in less than a week ... would be a good un' though.
Either way, there should be an answer pretty soon. Let's hope the card isn't pulled, as Haye needs to stay on his toes.

I had heard that Delaney was struggling to make weight?
Haye should be spoon fed a notorious loser at this stage in his career - especially after the Mock disaster.
How about Tony Booth/ Paul Bonson or another durable small heavy who wouldn't upset any apple carts?
Norton is definitly too polished and a long armed counter pucher. He would make good sparring for Haye but fighting him would be a mistake...

The reason why I mentioned Norton now is because, for me, he looked very rusty against Hobson. Now would be pretty much as good as time as any to fight him, because he will improve once he gets the fights in.
Having said that, Haye will also continue his development.
Bonson is not a bad call, not too sure about Tony Booth - will the BBC be to thrilled that Haye is going back over old crowned.
Any news about the status of the Southern Area? I am sure Delaney will be stripped, but I can't think who is a suitable opponent to fight for the vacant belt.

I phoned Boxing News and they don't know why Oboh pulled out. He's not the busiest of fighters, Oboh, due to his prodigious power, so it must have been something pretty serious.Kilburn wrote:Gutted. Both fights were very interesting.
What's wrong with Oboh?
As for Delaney, I think his well-documented struggle with the weight proved too much.

Cheers for the info, Riddick. Just going to check out Tony's record.Riddick Blowe wrote:I'm relieved. After his last fight Haye needs a couple of easy ones before he takes on a guy who comes to win and knows how to.
just read on the bbc site he's now fighting Tony Dowling. looks about the right opponent. Haye still has a lot of time.

I think this is a very good choice of opponent. Just checked out his recorded. His last victory against Browne seems a good one. After 9 fights I believe this is the sort of opponent who should ask some questions of David Haye, but Haye having enough talent to see him through.
Does anyone know if it is for the Southern Area Title, or has it not been given up by Delaney?

It's for the English cruiserweight title.cat wrote:I think this is a very good choice of opponent. Just checked out his recorded. His last victory against Browne seems a good one.
