Boxing legends turned out at Goodison Park last week to help raise money for a local boxer who was left fighting for his life after a British title fight six years ago in Sheffield.
Barry McGuigan was guest of honour at the evening in aid of Liverpool fighter Carl Wright, seriously injured in 1997 after losing on points to Mark Winters in a clash for the vacant British light-welterweight title (Wright collapsed after the fight with bleeding on the brain and slipped into a coma).
Among other boxers present were Shea Neary, Peter Culshaw, Richie Wenton, Colin Dunne, Andy Holligan, Paul Hodkinson and Alan Rudkin. Actor Ricky Tomlinson also supported the event along with former Everton skipper Kevin Ratcliffe.
Moving documentary footage was shown during the event, depicting Carl's brave battle to overcome the effects of his head injuries. He received a standing ovation when he took the microphone to personally thank guests for turning up to support him.
The event was organised by the Liverpool Echo's boxing correspondent Nick Peet after it was revealed that Wright had not received a penny in compensation from the boxing authorities.

Wright is walking around, and certainly looks okay from pictures of the event.

This has got me thinking, with the recent story of Marco Barrera and the fact were now seeing more and more fighters making better recoveries (i.e. Spencer Oliver, Carl Wright). Do you think it will ever come a time where the brain surgery will be so advanced and successful that boxers will be allowed to resume their careers?

Brain injuries
I think on principal anyone with a brain injury should not be able to fight again, if it is as a result of what happens in the ring at any case.
