Arthur splits with Maloney

Post by bennie »

Alex Arthur has split from co-manager Frank Maloney as he contemplates his future following defeat at the hands of Michael Gomez.

Arthur lost his British super-featherweight title against Gomez last month, and has spent a fortnight considering his next move.

He told the Scotsman that he plans to stick with co-trainer Terry McCormack - and American Freddie Roach.

However Maloney is no longer part of his plans, and Arthur will now only be managed by allegedly.

Arthur has to blame someone apart from himself.

It's been a terrible year for Maloney. Scott Harrison, Tony Oakey...and now this. If Scott beats Medina later this month, it will help. But losing a golden bollocks like Arthur is a blow.

An ex-golden bollocks like Arthur.

I doubt he has much more to offer after that beating he took, and frankly, harsh as it sounds, but having developed a real dislike for him, I hope his career stays in the doldrums.

Arthur's character has no discernable features whatsoever in my opinion.

To emphasise my point above, the reasons for my dislike of him are;

(1) Absolutely ZERO respect for Michael Gomez who dismantled him.

(2) Claims of a flu/sore throat (despite singing on his way to the ring) being the reason his got beaten.

(3) Talk of his affiliation with Freddie Roach as if he was James Toney or someone.

(4) Being someone clearly absorbed in their own media hype (even smiling to the CAMERA after a knockdown).

and more....

I just don't like him.........

Ingrate!

Typical, rather than look inward at where the problem lies, he splits with Maloney, as if it was his fault.

Arthur will I predict, never achieve shit.

He'e been exposed and will do well to recover from a beating like the one he took, people will see his weaknesses now and i think whoever he fights next will be winging away with left hands galore.

Don't really know how it was Maloney's fault he lost, but I don't like the Mental Midget much so can't blame him there...

I think Arthur is backing the wrong horse in Roach though - the man cleary hasn't got the time for him - one call from Tyson and he'll be off like a shot....again.

Just look at the way world champ Johnny Bredahl is treated - come 1/2 way round the world to hook up with Roach, and Freddie's gone AWOL - off with Tyson or Manny Pac.

1) This is a fair point. He did give Gomez some credit but nothing like the amount he deserves for his performance which was exceptional.

2) Despite singing or mouthing the words? I think you'll find he was hardly doing a pavarotti. Throat infection would of only affected his weight making however, not his poor defence.

3) Talks of his Roach affiliation like he should do. Roach said he wants Alex to move over to LA and work with him all the time. ALex says i might move so Freddie can work with me more. Whats wrong with that?

4) Media hype is what gets all of us talking about him and what could have filled the Meadowbank Arena 3 times over. Smiling at the camera was something i think that just happened. I mean did he look like he even knew what day it was?

and more....

I do like him and hope for British boxing's sake that he can come back with a better defence and better upper body movement because he has/had alot to offer.

Just 1 more point. Arthur's style has changed alot since moving pro. I have some of his amateur fights on tape and his head and upper body movement was class! He proved very difficult to score on. Why he lost that when going pro is beyond me. He had a few easy blow-outs and thinks he's some sort of seek and destroy fighter but he should stick to boxing on the outside, picking guys apart and THEN moving in for the kill.

p.s. why all the fuss about Arthur and Roach? No-one is making a noise about the fact that Roach didn't go with Bernard Dunne in his last outing.

I really don't know what to make of the developments today. I did suggest on another thread (as a joke) that maybe FM has concentrated a little bit too much on his own career of late and maybe neglecting his duties. I honestly was a joke, but when Arthur seemingly blames Maloney over himself or his training staff - then that question has to be asked.

However, I admit to having a soft spot for Maloney and over all I think he's a good bloke with a geniune affection for his fighters. The emotion he used to show/continues to show for the likes of Paul Ingle and Scott Harrison was great - maybe he cares a little too passionately for the sport if there is such a thing (hence why he says some emotionally filled comments like Scott Harrison can take Lennox Lewis!).

Its seems like a lot of fighters in the Maloney stable use him as the scape goat when things go wrong. Take Lennox Lewis, lets not forget when he got rid of Maloney. One cannot guess what happend in preparation of Rahman, or in this fight. However, what I can say with evidence is that both Lewis and Arthur seem to be personalities who don't wish to blame themselves and are often in denial. Take Lewis still claiming he's world champion after he got sparked, I really did think for a bit that the punch had a serious affect on his Brain - however, come the rematch he was still denying the defeat. Arthur seems (by his quotes) to be saying the same thing.

So if its not there fault, then who's too blame. The first call would be the coach - however, it was Lewis who selected Steward and Arthur who selected Roach. Perhaps, they'd rather blame their manager as opposed to admit their wrong with their coach selection (not saying either coach was a bad call mind). I just think its the personalities of the fighters, thats why they've dumped him - they don't want to admit their mistakes.

Maloney has shown that he can get a career back on track immediately after a setback. Take Paul Ingle and Scott Harrison. He's a good manager.

I honestly believe there is a lot more than meets the eye concerning Arthur and the Harrison camp split. The way he taunted Peter in the Limond fight, the way Peter so willingly wanted to help a long time Arthur rival out. Perhaps Arthur felt unconfortable with Maloney's continually closeness with Harrison.
