Gary Sykes v Anthony Crolla 2009 fight

Post by Autobarn »

i never caught this fight. i think it was on a flyweight or bantamweight undercard, on sky sports friday fight night.

i recall one poster referred to this fight - a british super featherweight title elim - in a discussion of the best fights of 2009. also, i looked at an extract from graham houston's preview of sykes-morris, which also makes it sound like an exciting fight:

Sykes gave an excellent performance last May when he outpointed Anthony Crolla in a British title eliminator. I was impressed with Sykes’s enthusiasm and energy. Sykes looked the stronger man and he had Crolla under heavy pressure in the fifth round. Crolla rallied, but Sykes finished the stronger fighter. He is a pressure fighter with good hand speed and he goes to the body well.
is this contest worth picking up, on DVD? was it a really good battle?

It was a really good fight, Sykes deserved the victory but it was close. I think a rematch should definetly be made :TU:
I think they have the full fight on youtube

looking forward to seeing this fight, which slipped under my radar a bit.

so why has crolla been so off the radar? - he looked an improved fighter, stopping brodie. i know brodie was old, but it was a great crossroads matchup, no place to go for the loser, and crolla boxed with controlled aggression to dominate.

surely he's looking like british title material after a couple of early career disappointments. is he kind of where john murray was, when murray was waiting for the likes of thaxton and meager (though it's not a perfect comparison, as murray's undefeated whereas crolla isn't)?

great fight, a "punch volume" type of fight rather than a fight in which power is the main factor.

around 1000 punches each in a 10 rounder. from what i saw of this it was better than sykes-morris where they threw similar # of shots in a 12 rounder. how dare they only show a fight like this in highlights.

this is another reason i want crolla to beat morris. so that we can see sykes-crolla 2, this time for the british title.

can't wait for next week's fight, morris-crolla. i hope this is another great fight.

you never know, though. because crolla may have changed his style and morris isn't as aggressive as sykes.
