Best of British

Post by Short-Left-Hook »

Afternoon All,

I recently bought a box set of Classic Boxing DVDs to watch in my digs on a night.

On one of the DVDs is the Benn vs Mclellen. Very explosive fight from start to finish with a very emotional ending (if we're honest). After I watched that fight I watched the first Eubank vs Benn fight, another classic (and the reason for buying the box set) then Lewis vs Vitali Klit.

After watching the 3 fights I couldn't help thinking that (the ending aside) Benn vs Mclellen IMO is probably the best fight ever on British soil.

What do you guys think? What was the best EVER fight fought on British soil? and Why?

Cheers SLH :bag:

I literally just finished watching McClellelan-Benn and it was a really entertaining fight but I couldnt believe the amount of rabbit punching Benn got away with, the referee was really poor. It was a really good fight though :bag: .

I agree, In fact i think the punishment Mclellan took to the back of his head, could have been a major contributary to the way in which the fight ended! Thoughts?

I was ringside that night, I remember Nigel going through the ropes, and thinking that didnt take long, I was dissapointed. Was about to go back to the dressing room and Nigel got up. It was unbelievable what happened after that, and like most I thought Gerald had Bottled it.

Must of been one hell of an atmosphere! It's a shame it ended the way it did because it was such a good fight!

I just watched McAuley vs Bassa and I felt that is a better fight than Benn-McClellan. I thought the skill level and drama was slightly better, I can't think of any better fights on British soil!!

Bassa vs McAuley 1 is my pick as well Alex though for atmosphere and overall drama McClellan and Benn has it.

it isn't quite one of my absolute faves as both went down very suddenly, as if they (or at least one of them) had serious chin problems.

I thought that added to the drama as both could be hurt at any time and a punch could change it! The 2nd fight was a great example of a fighter changing his tactics in a rematch! Bassa outmoded MacAuley and looked really good but it still looked as though it could explode at any occassion

i prfer mcguigan vs pedroza. pedroza took some terrible shots and it was exciting, seeing him rally back proudly. and mcguigan was applying superb pressure.

I think, and I could possibly be wrong here, but McAuley holds the records for knockdowns scored against in world title fights for a fighter from the British Isles.

Would take a lot to trump Alan Rudkin vs Walter McGowan II. The best British fight ever in my eyes.

Benn v McLellan was a classic, an utterly brutal affair.

Of the recent fights, for edge of the seat, toe to toe action, I rate the Froch V Pascal fight right up there. Brilliant fight and showed what tough men both fighters were. Froch's finest hour by a stretch so far.
