For the older ones !
Charnley got as near as you can to be undisputed world lightweight champion , without actually winning it , in the early 1960's . But for some reason he's hardly ever mentioned nowadays . He's listed as being from Deptford , but I believe that Dave might have been a Scot . I think his mother and father came from Motherwell , and he also lived there for a time when he was young .
I've been trying for some time through the advertised boxing video distributers to get footage of any of his fights without any success . Also tried ITN and BBC but they won't even let a non staff member contact their archive department . There is a very small clip of his win over Darkie Hughes on Pathe News ,but thats about it . Does anyone out there have any of his fights on film ??

Funny you should mention him actually I have got this old sports book that use to be my father's and he pops up in it briefly sending Joe Lucy to the canvas during their British title fight in the boxing chapter of the book.

First Fighter I ever saw train, fantastic fighter, was in the Beckett 63. Probably one of the ten best Fighters these shores have produced.
Re: DAVE CHARNLEY
Interestingly, Dick McTaggert was stopped by Dave in a round. Two others from the Lodge beat Him Cheevers and Occonnell. Out of interest whats Dave doing with Himself now.
Re: DAVE CHARNLEY
Dave is from Dartford, the best British fighter never to win a world title - by a street.

Re: DAVE CHARNLEY
Agreed. He moved to Welter from Lightweight (in the days without HGH and 27 hour weigh ins) and beat Peter Waterman for the European title. Waterman was an Olympic Medalist (Helsinki?) and had beaten Kid Gavilan.bennie wrote:Dave is from Dartford, the best British fighter never to win a world title - by a street.
The best fighter from these shores comes from Wilde, Berg, Lewis, Len Harvey, Charnley, Buchanan or Conteh. Couldnt split em.
