2011 Who should go and Who should stay.

Post by Grant »

Who would you like to see pull the pin at the end of this year, either for their own good, or the good of the sport.

My wish would to see Shannon Taylor retire and watch from the sidelines. A stellar career by any measure but now fighting up and comers on undercards is not where he should be.

No 2 is of course "Big Bob"

Also i ask that everyone be a little civil as these guys, in their prime, had a crack

Colin Willson should give it away I thought Big Bob did give it away? Hoppa/ Nada Handen/The Elamore boys/Les piper and Shanon Taylor all should call it a day.
We will get some new fights comeing through from the Comm Game to take there place.

In theory there are plenty who should hang them up but its a centuries old boxing necessity that the game needs old champs to hang around to test the up and comers.

Gatekeepers are critical to the growth of the sport and if all the mature boxers hang up their gloves then we have to import all opponents and there is nobody to learn lessons from.

Also plenty of the older guys rely on the second income and as long as they pass their MRI and are not slurring or are not matched ridiculously I've got no problem with guys fighting on.

Having said that I think Col Wilson is ok to fight on, Nader is full of life and a great match up for up and coming fighters, Shannon Taylor has turned his life around and looking his fittest in yearsand Hoppa has plenty left to offer below the elite level should he get serious about training.

Bob is the only one that I would like to retire due to the sheer punishment he takes every fight. Nick Lantouris recently retired and it seemed like the right time.

Very harsh call nominating Piper for retirement.
On 14/10/10 Les and Omar Shaick fought for the vacant Queensland Middlweight title with Shaick getting the nod in a very
hard close fight. Both fighters were extremely fit and looked like they could have gone 12 rds. Unlike a lot of other state and
national titles in recent times this one was worthy of a title fight.
At 27yrs Piper looks like he's got plenty more left in him. Piper V Jarrod Fletcher would be a good stoush.

The only fighter I'd like to nominate for retirement is that fraud Anthony Mundine.

Love your work Beltane.

Wilson should stay, as long as he trains, he showed a few of this so-called wrecking balls a thing or 2, Nader i thought at least drew with Jnr, and Les piper is only 27 and fan friendly.

I think Big Bob, Taylor,Mckay and a few others that are consistanly losing, they are all good fighters and have all proven there worth, but it's just time.

Another one who needs to consider his place in the game is William Hadlow, who is now just being used as cannon fodder by promoters blooding fighters to build up their records.

I agree with what you say about Hadlow. I didn't mind him fighting Robbie Bryant, seeing as Hadlow was the naturally bigger man by two weight classes, but his upcoming fight with unbeaten light heavyweight Andy Green is a mismatch if I ever saw one.

This fight has been canned anyway, Green is injured again with a crook shoulder, Haldow was looking for a rematch with Bryant, but weight differences this time arouns saw the end to this second fight,

the main push behind Hadlow is his trainer Les Wilson, Willie is a warrior and fights anyone, he gets good cash, but for how long can this last.

Wish there were more with the heart of Hadlow, we may see some good old fashioned fights

Cheers

Just when you thought it was safe to get back into the bleachers, Big Bob is pencilled in for a six rounder on 19th November at Revesby Workers. Poor old Bob only lasted 1 round in his last fight and was bloody awful in the previous two before that.

The thread's title says it all: "Who should go...", and that's sadly you Bob as we don't want to see you ending up a total palooka!

I have been watching these tournaments on fox from England. I like it and it's a goodway for some of the fighters in the top ten in the Aussie rankings to show their skills on tv.

disagree grant, while i like the idea in general & it is good entertainment, some of the top boys fighting 10 or 12 rounders probly wouldnt suit the concept, bloody good for fighters on the way up though, & it gets there name out there, jmo
