Donald Curry who/what/why/where

Post by jamesmcdonnell »

Anyone got any pointers for where I can find out information on where and what Don Curry is at now?

Also, anyone know any good leads for information on his troubles outside of the ring, particularly I would like to know where his alleged problems with drug abuse began? I remember them surfacing around the time he lost to McCallum, just after I believe, but I wonder how long he had been indulging himself in the tickle of the white lady before that.

I would be particularly intrested to find out if his precipitation into despair co-incided with getting his ass turned into a hat by Lloyd?

I was a massive fan of Curry.

IMO he burned out as an Amateur, but in his prime, when he beat McCrory, he was one of the most awesome fighters of all time.

That performance was the greatest I have seen by a boxer in my lifetime.

I was talking to an IBF judge, Tony Pellulio, at the Woods - Johnson fight in Sheffield recently. Tony told me that, sadly, he heard that Curry was still in jail.

Sad, very sad.

I remember Harry Mullan telling me how a peak Don Curry threw a wobbly at a Las Vegas buffet because he had to queue like everyone else. It was the first time a chink in the Curry armour was revealed publicly. It must have been 1985. Up to then, he had always come across as totally opposite to his volatile brother Bruce, who tried to shoot his trainer Jesse Reid after Reid told him to retire. But now we know Don had his own problems.

I met Curry in Canastota NY this past June. He looked good and said everything was good. He graciously signed autographs and took pictures for every one. There was a long line waiting to meet him.

WSBUF, so I take it he isn't in jail then as claimed?

Precious little has been heard about Curry since he retired, I wondered what he was doing now. I would really like to try and get in touch with him to arrange an interview, but haven't the slightest who to ask about it.

Anyone who knows any contacts stateside to contact, please let me know. Does anyone here know who Don Curry was trained by?

Curry was managed by Fort Worth's Dave Gorman and trained by the Mexican Paul Reyes.

I have heard that Dave isn't in the best of health nowadays. Your best bet, James, would be to go through Curry's ex-trainer, Paul Reyes, who currently trains Paulie Ayala. Try contacting Reyes at: [email protected]
Or via Ayala himself at:
