getting back to normal Stu Jones :P :P
What british fighters do you reckon are fighitng in the wrong weight divison, ie they could achieve more in another division or they have to move up cause they look weak at the weight, and cant performe to their best ability,

I think Gary Lockett needs to slim down back to Light-Middleweight if at all possible, that is where his career took off, it has all gone stale since he moved up to Middleweight. Don't know if he has serious weight problems or what but i don't think he has even fought within the Middleweight limit yet has he? As far as i know he has had all his Middleweight fights weighing as a Super Middle?Although i could be wrong.

Wayne Alexander should go back to light-middle
Scott Harrison to super-feather if he loses to Medina
Gary Lockett was good suggestion whoever made it, Steve or Terry?
Anthony Farnell should go down to light-middle
Jason Cook to light-welter maybe?
Kevin Bennett to light-welter definitely!
Wayne McCullough should forget campaigning at feather and return to super-bantam
Scott Harrison to super-feather if he loses to Medina

Yes i agree, i think Paulie Ayala should do likewise to McCullough but seen as he aint British i don't know why i mentioned it :P I think someone else mentioned Lockett first i merely jumped on the bandwagon.lightsoot wrote:Wayne Alexander should go back to light-middle

Yeah I agreeREAL_DEAL wrote:Jason Cook is in the right divison, he can make the weight faily easy if he trains probably, plus hes a world champion :P
Steve I'm realise my 700+ posts is nothing compared to yours, but I thought you'd know me by now.
Steve Foster is another fighter who won't be a Super Bantam for much longer.
Anybody else think Neil Sinclair struggles a bit at the weight, perhaps thats why he's feeling depressed. Also he lacked that sharpness against Pryce. Maybe thats just me though.

But does Cook make the weight easily?? I always thought he struggled to make the lightweight championship limit? Cook couldnt or chose not to make 9st9 when fighting Vincent Howard in a non-title affair. This fight came immediately after he lost his European title on the scales to Zoff. Some statement he made by coming in at 9st11 then
Stu, I think Neil Sinclair is depressed because he doesn;t fancy wearing a WBU title round his wasit and that his career in the last 2 years has been advancing at snail pace.

Yeah, I do agree although a constant battle with the scales can also compound the depression. I don't know at all, its just a guess really. I thought he lacked a little snap against Pryce.lightsoot wrote:But does Cook make the weight easily?? I always thought he struggled to make the lightweight championship limit? I think Magee has made a wise move going up to Welter, its a weaker devision and I think Magee skills can not only make waves at a domestic level, but also a world level. He's not quite good enough at Light Welter (only by a whisker) but I don't think the main contendors are near the level of Hatton and Urkal at Welter.

I think you could add David Walker to that list. I'm amazed he can't make welterweight given his relatively small frame. He looks dwarfed by these big 154 lbers, and I think if he wants to get any kind of success at British title level his best bet is boiling down. But then again, if he was weight drained against Jimmy Vincent, perhaps it's best staying where he is. Who knows.
Yep, I agree - he looks like he can make Welter confortably enough. He doesn't appear to have the power to really turn the tables at Light Middle. Did he ever say he was weight drained against Vincent?get in the ring wrote:I think you could add David Walker to that list. I'm amazed he can't make welterweight given his relatively small frame. Yeah he said he was badly weight drained for that fight and had a hard time boiling down.Yep, I agree - he looks like he can make Welter confortably enough. He doesn't appear to have the power to really turn the tables at Light Middle. Did he ever say he was weight drained against Vincent?
As you say, Walker doesn't have the pop to hurt the big boys at light middle, and for an all out exciting brawler like Walker, that's something you need. At least at welter you'd imagine he'd carry more firepower.
I hope David can come back from the Karmazin loss, but I realise it will be hard to get a British title crack at light middleweight. Will be interesting to see what is planned for Walker, there's no doubting he puts on exciting fights.

On the subject of weight making. Micky Ward has amazingly stayed at 140 lbs his whole 18 year career. That's some feat considering Ward, who ended his career close to the age of 40, has managed his boxing career around a part time paving job in Lowell, Mass.
Ward insisted fighters that move up in weight only do so because they are lazy and do not want to train as hard as they did when they were younger.
Perhaps he's right. Perhaps the key is to alternate between roadwork and paving.

Yeah I agree, just look at Tyson and Holyfield aswell. Mike showed he could still make his old fighting weight and it was well documented that he only trained solidly for 4 weeks.get in the ring wrote:Ward insisted fighters that move up in weight only do so because they are lazy and do not want to train as hard as they did when they were younger.
Thats why my original list of names had alot of fighters moving back down to their original weight, with the right nutritional advice fighters should make the weight of when they were 25 when their in they're mid 30's.
Chris Eubank is another example.

When I fought Jason Cook in the amateurs about 10 years ago, he was 10st on the scales then (compared to my 9st); I find it really difficult to believe that he can make 9st 9lb easily ten years on.
Also, there have been reports of him being near the 11st mark in training. Not sure if there is any truth in this though.

I think ironically that Ward's job probably helped rather than hindered his weight situation - because it was hard physical labour he probably didn't get the chance to 'blow up' between fights/training and so boiling down didn't become an issue.
While I think there are undoubtedly cases where fighters move up in weight because of 'laziness', there are equally cases out there were it becomes a necessity to move up because of genetics - Oscar could never have stayed at super feather/lightweight for example. As with most things, you have to judge it on a case by case basis as individuals differ so much.
In response to Jacko, Rhodes was preparing for a title fight against him at middleweight, and would easily have done 11st 6lbs.
He didn't chase the weight down, knowing roughly what Jacko would weigh.
On 13/3 his intention is to come in at 11st 4lbs.
Back to the main thrust of the thread, I believe Rhodes should campaign at Light Middle.
He will be training abroad next week in a far sunnier climate along with a few of the lads from Wincobank, and will start to boil down.
If Rhodes does the weight, I think he will be a serious threat because he won't lose his power.
He falls between two stools.
A powerful LM, but a small MW.
This year is a biggy for him but my faith is still with him, unlike many doubters.
