According to boxingaction.com, Bob Arum is looking to stage a showdown between Ricky Hatton and Floyd Mayweather Junior. There could be something in it. Arum is looking at a pay-per-view bonanza down the line between Mayweather and Arturo Gatti and would need to satisfy punters of Mayweather's ability at light-welterweight first in an attractive yet safe match at the weight. Enter the exciting, unbeaten, cut-prone, hittable Hatton, who faces his first serious test as a pro next month against Ben Tackie (who is highly respected in the States). Hatton's WBU light-welterweight title wouldn't be on the line (Mayweather wouldn't be interested in that), so the fight would probably be a non-title affair. Thus Hatton could fall back on his paper crown if he loses.
I couldn't understand why allegedly wasn't interested in accepting a WBC final eliminator for Ricky against Oktay Urkal recently (choosing the dangerous Tackie in a WBU title defence instead), nor in a chance to lure Vivian Harris over here for a WBA title crack (Harris is defending in Berlin against Urkal instead). But now it's all starting to make sense.
