Interim? I thought Rigo won the Vacant title in his fight with Cordoba. If this fight does happen I'm afraid to say I only see one winner, Rigo will totally outbox him catching him coming in and moving, Casey won't be able to get off his combo's against Rigo so will be forced to throw single shots and he can't do that against Rigo imo

Ryol Li lee, the dude who beat Poonsawat is the WBA champion. Rigo will be hot favourite no doubt. Doesn't matter really, I'll be at it cheering him on (as I will be next Friday night in Tallaght 8) ). Met Willie in person, he's a feckin' gentleman. God I hope he wins. If he wins then we have a trip to Japan to look forward too :D

Willie "Big Bang" Casey steps up against Cuba's Guillermo Rigondeaux in a surprise crack at the interim WBA super-bantamweight title in Millstreet in the Irish Republic on March 19.
Southpaw Casey, an unbeaten fighter from Limerick, turned pro late and needs to take his chances at the age of 28. Last time out he thumped fellow Irishman Paul Hyland in four rounds for the European super-bantamweight title but the strong, heavy handed, superfit Casey has his hands full with Rigondeaux who won two Olympic gold medals before defecting to the United States last year, where he turned pro and has rattled off seven straight wins.
Just last month, southpaw Rigondeaux climbed off the floor to outscore the dangerous and vastly more experienced Ricardo Cordoba for the interim WBA title. It was an astonishing leap from Rigondeaux, who has every shot in the book and floored Cordoba in return with a left hand to the liver.
The new champion is slick, quick and talented, but Casey is no mug either, particularly on home soil where Dubliner Bernard Dunne upset the odds to win the same title last year. Make no mistake, Casey will be fired up for the fight of his life.

Wow, Willie's really going for it. Good on him. I wasn't overly impressed with Rigo in his last fight. He's still very amateur in his style, although obviously good. Rigo got tagged for a KD in his last fight so if Willie lands a good shot, who knows. Whatever, good luck Willie.

Slick wizened scribe surprisingly sits on the fence in his customary little article on boxing matters.
Pensioner bennie, a man with a vast knowledge of boxing but a slight chip on the shoulder, comes into the preview with a well-padded record, but his all-round game means he generally gets the job done. However, he faced a tricky test here between boxer and brawler and failed to call a winner. The heart says give him another chance but the head says bennie bottled it. 5/10.

I'd say Rigondeaux will completly out box and stop Casey inside of 6 rounds.

Casey is brave and fun to watch, but i would envision a gulf in class between the 2 that would be too much for him.

Some people are saying this is a bad fight for Willie to take i say why not?

He has nothing to lose and if he is ever going to beat rigondeaux its is now. Cordoba only lost by SD when Rigo was the "home " fighter whilst i conced that Rigo undoubtedly has the better pedigree and a wider variety and selection of shots he looked lethargic after the halfway point against Cordoba and seemed to just want to do just enough. Somebody like Casey with a high workrate and decent power could make him sweat if he is able to take it into the later rounds.

Should be a good payday for the lad and worst comes to the worst Kiko will probably be waiting for him if he were to lose straight back in at Euro level

Also on a side note isnt Casey a breath of fresh air how great is it to see a fighter do things the hard way and be rewarded for it whoever his manager is i would like to give him a pat on the back. First went to Canada to beat an unbeaten prospect then went through 3 of Britains best prospects in prizefighter he used that momentum to keep himself busy before winning the Euro title and is now possibly going onto the world stage all in 11 fights

It's early days. Casey has a warm-up fight in December. He needs to do the full eight rounds in that fight, in my opinion.

Not to mention stopping Paulie Hyland for that Euro belt. Hyland was no mug and I actually thought he would beat Casey.

Those people are complete pudenda then. Willie Casey is an absolute gentleman and always conducts himself with class and dignity. If you hold a person in low regard because they are related to some undesirable people it makes you nothing more than a bigoted prick.

Willie Casey got me hooked and Rigondeaux struggled against a negative Cordoba. Take this fight - Willie can win.

Pity its for an Interim when the champion is fine. How does that work?

I'm amazed any one gives Casey any chance at all. Only one result and that's a Rigondeaux win.

Full marks to Casey for stepping up. :TU:

What do you mean by negative? Cordoba gave a fine effort, he was just outboxed and found it difficult to deal with Rigo's movement. Cordoba is a proven world class fighter, so struggling against him doesn't say much. Very tough fight for Casey, but props to him if he takes it.

in my opinion its a wrong fight to take, ok he'll get paid well. he just isnt ready for this fight for me, going in against arguably the greatest amateur boxer ever. if he does win.. hes at that level then against another world class fighter. unbeaten record on the line and it could break his heart as a fighter?!?! good luck big bang

He seems like a breath of fresh air to me; granted I don't know the fellow or his kin but he is certainly delivering the goods, doesn't speak out of turn and respects his foes after the bout.
