What defeat hurt most as a fan? Which win d'ya enjoy most?

Post by Chambers2 »

We all suffer the highs and lows of boxing results, but which were the highest and lowest for you?

Lows
Audley-Danny I was probably the lowest for me, it was when I first became alerted to Audleys frailties after championing him

Although it was an expected result, Bruno losing to Tyson (first time) was painful, everyone LOVES Bruno

Highs
Froch-Pascal & Haye-Mormeck
Fave fighters winning Woirld titles in barnstorming contests

I'm gonna have to put Khans win over Maidana in this section as well, Khan facing and beating his demons in an up and downer

Low

Hatton ,osing to PBF. I genuinely bought into the hype and though Hatton had a chance.

Highs

Corrales - Castillo. Favourite fighter winning in a legendary fight.

Also, pretty much any JM Marquez victory of the past couple of years.

Darren McDermott losing his only chance of a shot at the british title- which he WOULD have won- by the headbutt vs elcock. absolutely gutting.

Lows
Honeygan Vs Vacca - Such a sh!tty way to lose the title

Tyson Vs Douglas - I just loved Mike at that point and was so gutted when he got ko'd.

Eubank Vs Collins - Chris was a favourite of mine and couldn't believe he'd lost.

Lennox Vs Mcall 1 - Couldn't believe it and knew full well he'd be frozen out of the heavyweight picture for some time by Don King and the Americans

Howard Eastman Vs Joppy - had the title in the palm of his hand and blew it

Highs
Eubank Vs Watson 2 - was so pleased for Chris, shame about Watson

Benn Vs Mcclellan - best fight I ever saw.

Bruno Vs Mcall - so chuffed Frank finally won the world title.

Calzaghe Vs Lacy - shut so many yanks up

Calzaghe Vs Hopkins - as above!

Lows

Reid v Ottke - seeing Reid warned for punching Ottke in the face really took the biscuit.
Anderson V Groves - really thought Kenny had him, almost burst my vocal chords shouting at the telly for him to finish him off.
Leonard v Hagler - Big Hagler fan. Gutted.

Highs

Toney v Jirov - can't believe I've been beaten to listing this one :D . Just about soiled myself when Toney decked him.
Calzaghe v Lacy - even funnier on the re-run when you hear Joe after round 1 or 2 saying "he's got fck all" - Near perfect performance, Lacy was a class fighter no matter how bad his decline has been since. Joe destroyed him.

2010
High's
Burns/Martinez
What a fight, and a great performance in an action packed dust up.

Simpson/Lindsay
People were writing JS of before it and Lindsay was highly regarded but Simpson put on a brilliant performance to get his Lonsdale Belt

Lows
Appelby/Laryea
A skilled boxer like Paul struggling desperately with an awkward African who he really should of beaten! So frustrating to watch.

Mosley/Mora
Seeing Mosley struggle desperately against a fighter he would of demolished in his prime! Another frustrating fight

i said to my mate who had STUPIDLY purchased BBC Sports Personality of the Year contender (farce) David Haye's embarrassing Harrison encounter that only ONE man in the arena would get a bigger reception than Lewis....Big Frank.....and as it happened he didn't seem to do. In fact if it wasn't for Lewis, Bruno would not have even been given a mention let alone invited into the ring. Maybe they were concerned over Bruno's mental state. I was disappointed anyway as I thought the roof would have come off personally.

Lows:

Derry Matthews getting sparked by Lindsay after looking in control. Was gutted at the time.

McDermott getting robbed by Fury was bad. Weren't necessarily a fan of McDermott's, I just found it disgusting how he could get robbed like that.

Highs:

Froch nailing Taylor with 14 seconds left. Quality. Was bouncing off the walls.

Swifty getting the SD against Simpson earlier in the year. As a keen fan, I was made up because I didn't know how the judges were going to score it, especially with it being in Glasgow.

Prescott KOing Khan was good. Couldn't stand the lad at the time, and was made up with the setback he suffered.

Tyson was shot to sh*t. He'd been beating up other no hopers way past it like Julius Francis and would soon get duffed up by Williams and McBride.
Lennox on the other hand got banged out by both Mccall and Rahman, banging people out being Tyson's speciality......so you honestly think it's a fair reflection on their primes???

Prime Tyson gives a prime Lennox all kinds of problems. Not saying it would have been an easy fight but sooner or later Lennox would have copped for one and gone the way of so many others.

Tyson in 2002 was old and crap, Lennox was entering his prime.

Lennox was on the slide by then, 1997-2000 were his best year.

The great thing about this fight was that it put an end to the freakshow that is Tyson as a worldclass boxer.

Enjoyed: obviously froch and khans exhilirating recent victories but perhaps my favourite joe calzaghes incredible beating of jeff lacey. Also loved duran-barkley

I hated seeing dave mcauley lose twice to bassa, also mcguigan losing to cruz and mcdonnel.

the Lacy victory in retrospect isn't as good because Lacy was exposed as one-dimensional.

However, Calzaghe's victory over Kessler was a fantastic sporting event and I'd backed Joe to win and he did.

Most painful:

Jimmy Neary v Mickey Ward. I was young and thought Jimmy was invincible and would walk through all before him. I just didn't think he could lose.

Ricky Hatton v Floyd Mayweater Jr. Mayweather's personality in the build up to the fight really irked me and I had a genuine hatred of him come fight night. I wanted Ricky to win so much and was devestated when he didn't get up from the left hook.

Most enjoyable:

Froch v Taylor. Unlucky Carl, it was a tough first defence. You lost to a very good figh.............GO ON LAD!!!!!! YEEEESSSSS!!!! Jesus wept, where the fudge did that come from?!

Ricky Hatton v Kostya Tzsyu. Just a great night.

i was never a massive Lewis fan so fair enough. All I meant was he retired at the top and from my recollection he'd been there sitting pretty for some time. Maybe that, plus the fact that by the end he'd managed to go a good while without getting sparked out. As I say tho I'm no expert on Lewis' career.
Lewis, aside from having some skill and a heart had massive physical advantages over most opponents. Height, reach etc...

Tyson was the better fighter Prime for Prime without a doubt.

LOWS:

Definitely McGuigan losing to Stevie Cruz
Honory mentions for Naz losing to MAB and Hoko losing to Goyo Vargas
Honeyghan's losses to both Starling and Breland, the latter in particular

HIGHS:
Naz beating Kevin Kelley
Lewis beating Razor Ruddock in such emphatic fashion
Benn beating the GMan
Calzaghe beating Lacy
Didn't watch it live, but remember nearly leaping out of the car when I heard on the radio that Honeyghan had beaten Curry and then seeing the highlights
Froch beating Pascal

Lows:

Watching Morales getting stopped by Pacquiao - a shadow of his former self. Glen Catley getting robbed for the European title against Danillo Hausler, Roy Jones getting sparked by Tarver and then Johnson.

Highs:

Loads really. Recently: watching Ricky Burns beat Martinez. I was well chuffed for him. Hatton beating Tszyu, Lewis -Rahman 2, Clinton Woods finally beating Johnson.

And Micky Hunter beating Esham pickering - I'd put a large amount on Hunter to win and absolutely shat myself when he was floored heavily in the first - and practically gave up hope after a similar thing happened in the second. Wlad beating Peter first time round was another one - not a fan of Wlad at all but again had a shedload on him at 11/8 (seems ridiculous now that he was the underdog) and the contrasting emotions of seeing him go down three times yet still pull out the win was a pretty sweet feeling.
