What If? - Robinson-Moore

Post by crooked nose »

What if Sugar Ray Robinson had made another attempt at the light-heavy crown against Archie Moore? This time in an air-conditioned arena. Who wins, Sugar or Mongoose?

the mongoose...and the sugar man knew it. there were efforts...all insincere...just to get their names in the sports pages to make such a fight from time to tme but nothing ever came of them.

Robinson challenged maxim because maxim wasn't a puncher....and regardless of how much the heat did or didn't have in that fight and even though robinson was well ahead maxim did show he was much stronger than robinson. archie was just too hard of a puncher and too strong in general for the sugar man, and of course one of the smartest boxers ever. robinson was not a big middleweight in poundage, though he would have been average height. if he had beaten maxim it's doubtful if he intended to defend the title...he was probably going to make it his retirement fight, witht he honopr of having won three crowns. he knew he couldn't compete with the best in that division....because they also fought so many heavyweights....and sugar ray just didn't have that kind of strength to deal with the pushing and shoving and body attack he'd have to face.

i WAS amazed at how robinson actually staggered maxim in their fight...maxim had one of ther best chins in both the heavyweight division (where he competed well for a while) and i among the light heavys when he dropped down to challenge there.

It's hard to pick. I agree Moore would have the strength and bulk advantage, but would Robinson be able to pile up a points win with speed and accuracy?

Archie Moore was far too savvy and hit far too hard for Robinson to beat him, he did struggle with fast handed fighters, but not ones he would have outweighed by

I think Archie would have lain a beating on Robinson, and might have become the only man to stop him.

Joey Maxim stopped Robinson, James. Well, Maxim and an intense New York heatwave.

Great fight and it'd be very close, but as Sugar Ray is the best there ever was I'd give him the edge.
I could see him staying away from the slower Moore, picking up the points over 15 rounds.
I think he punched hard enough to get Archie's respect too.

I think Moore would have been too strong for Robinson... if Ray had wanted the fight then it would have happened.... it would have been a great fight though... shame it never took place...

I meant KO him Bennie, as opposed to being forced to quit by the heat.

Moore hit hard enough to drop Marciano, I'm sure he would have hurt Robinson very badly indeed. Also, Robinson was not that hard to hit at middleweight, I've watched quite a few of his fights on tape, and plenty of fighters stuck one on him, Archie would have found a way to get to Robinson, who wasn't at his best at middleweight anyhow, and at light heavyweight, I think he would have been broken down by Moore's craft and punchpower.
