Did James Bone Crusher Smith Box Amateur?

He never turned pro til he was 28, did he get any amateur fights in first?

From what I understand he had taken up boxing when he was in the US Army.

He lost to Marvis Frazier at some point, also sparred with Greg Page in that same time frame.
