Eamomn Magee - The Future.

Post by stujones »

Well, I hope Eamomn will be reading this thread. Where do you think Eamomn's future lies. At Light Welter or Welter. Personally, I think he should stay at Welter. For me I think he should be ranked somewhere around #16 (in the world now) at Light Welter, however due to the lack of depth in the the Welterweight devision I think he can make real in roads for a proper world title shot.

I don't even think the most ardent Magee supporter can see him winning a world title at the lower weight, put simply the likes of Tszyu, Mitchell, Gatti, Cotto, Mayweather etc are to good.

However, there will be some major changes at the higher weight come next week. I fully expect the winner of the unification bout (and don't write off Spinks) to move up and challenge Moseley at Light Middle. Therefore, there might be three belts up for grabs. The likes of Damnguard, Tarnat, Paccrillo etc aren't in the class of Urkal - and Magee showed that he was at least in his class.

Had Hare not have lost, then I would have expected him to be in the world title picture - I fully expect to see Eamomn in the top 10 in some of the world governing bodies now. Good match making and he could be a world champion (geniune one) before his Light Welter rivals. I think we could be celebrating a world champion before the end of 2004. I would certainly feel more confident if Magee was facing Damnguard than Tszyu.

As Bennie said, Magee looks bigger than a guy who has campaigned at Light Middle, I think the move to the higher weight could give Magee a new lease of life and possibly a world title.

It will be interesting to see what the IBF rankings are next month, Hare might still be in the top ten a Magee vs Hare match up will see the winner sore up the rankings.

According to Sporting Life.com, Magee has just signed a six-fight deal with allegedly, of which presumably the Vincent fight was the first. That gives him a chance of securing a big fight at welter, or more likely of making a few defences of his spurious WBU title (I can see a Magee-Sinclair showdown happening down the line, and possibly even Magee-Barnes). Also on Sporting Life.com, Magee talked of meeting Hatton at catchweight (around 10st 3lbs), which suggests to me that Magee will be staying at welter.

I dont think Barnes will be mixing with him for a while. Warren still isn't keen on a Barnes-Vincent rematch, i think the british title came too soon for him.

Magee IMO should start looking at Junior Witter, but a fight with Sinclair would be fantastic, but i dont think Sinky's heart is in the sport anymore, which is a shame.

Urkal is fighting Harris next for the WBA title, if he wins (which i think may happen) the european title will be vacant.

Don't get carried away though, outside the UK Jimmy Vincent is still a journeyman who pulled of some upsets in a row

yeah on the face of it it looks like that. But we know as british fans that Vincent is certainly good enough to reign as a british champion for more than just 1 fight or so.

I think the fight proved that Magee is a level or two above british title level.

Very true, but you have to look at the depth of talent (or lack of) in the devision as a whole. Urkal and Hatton I believe are good enough to beat any of the fighters outside of Mayorga and possibly Spinks at the higher weight. Magee will possibly be a better Welterweight than Hatton and Urkal, because he's certainly got a bigger frame.

Eamomn Magee, albiet in losing efforts, showed that he can certainly mix it with these guys. With the likes of Damnguard probably in line for a geniune world title shot - I think the future for Magee is certainly more rosey than if he stays at Light Welter.

Eamonn should stay at Welterweight as Stu says there are more title opportunities at one of the weaker divisions. Magee boxed well last night against Vincent and kept a potentially dangerous foe under complete control all night, Magee-Sinclair would be a good all Northern Ireland battle although i would still favour Magee and eve more so with Sinclair's recent lapse in Boxing interest. However Magee-Hatton is unlikely to happen, you think Hatton wants to go through the troublesome counter puncher again? I think not. Hatton-Urkal would be interesting though, Hatton running around trying to nail Urkal who would be just running himself all night!

One thing I was reminded of by watching Magee - he is a hard fighter to get excited about - all that countering.

He will always be difficult to promote.

yeah i'm also still waiting for the signs that he's a 'jokester' outside of the ring like Ian Darke keeps telling us about.

I've met Magee a few times at shows and he is a character, always good for a laugh.

Quite possibly, but i refer to his fighting style.

When fights fall into his preferred pattern, it usually means him back-pedalling furiously for 12 whilst delivering occasional potshot hooks and uppercuts.

IMO if he doesn't stop them early they lean towards tedium.

All fair points guys.
I think that the Hatton and Urkal fights were much closer than they were scored. And who knows what would've happened if Hatton's personal ref Mr Mickey didn't hold back Magee in the 2nd.

What I was trying to say is, as close as they were, Magee lost those fights.

I like counterpunchers and I like Magee alot.
He surely could make some noise with the current state of the division.
Especially Europe is very weak. I would pick him over the likes of Damgaard, Aguzum or Michel Trabant or even Michele Piccirillo(if it's not in Italy)
With Frederic Klose as Euro titlebelt holder it's there for graps.

why? I didn't realise he was supposed to combine being a boxer with a stand up comedian routine.
