Hope this happens. Give Warren his dues - he delivered the title shot for Burns and on home soil.

I'd imagine that another voluntary will happen in spring for Burns, would hope that a unification could be arranged between the two as Burns and Fana both seem keen on the fight. Hope IBF and WBO willing to let it happen if both parties agreed (see that there are two eliminators coming up - one for WBO and one for IBF involving Baloyi believe it or not!)

Ricky Burns is a tough man and fun to watch but Fana would probably outbox him badly. If burns becomes the top man at 130, it would really show us how sparse the super featherweight division is. Still Nice to see these guys looking for the big fight.

I like Burns and think he has a great shot in this fight. This shows how terrible the division is.

I've heard Burns talk about this fight before.
He wants it (partly) due to the winner will be recognized as the World Champ at 130 lbs. by The Ring.

I just love it when a fighter says he is interested in another belt besides (or instead of) the one he already has, especially when is a belt that charges no sanctioning fees.
Doens't exactly make the WBO look good when their own guy doesn't consider himself the champ.

Can't help but like a fighter like Ricky Burns :TU:

You mean the ring belt, I believe they do charge sanctioning fee now!

First I've heard of that, where did you get that info from? I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with that.

Would be a good fight, I'm always in favour of unifications. Burns can box a bit, sometimes looks uncomfortable against pressure fighters. You would have to give him a chance but I think he'd start as underdog. Would be nice if it was in the UK.

Good fight if this comes off...
Who would have thought Fana would has done as well as he had? i remember years back when he lost widely on points to Dean Pithie

Indeed. Though he's done so well thanks to the machinations of the IBF & whoever decided to keep that belt in South Africa thanks to the frankly ridiculous Fana/Baloyi/Klassen merry-go-round. Since being smashed by Barrera (two rounds guys, & this is an old 130 lbs Barrera not the 23 yr.-old Superbantam version) there's no-one I even recognise on Fana's record who's not South African (apart from Javier Alvarez, who once beat Michael Gomez & earned his shot by... losing to the resuscitated corpse of Manuel Medina). It's shocking.

At least if Burns wins the IBF title it'll stop it being the equivalent of a regional championship... Until the IBF strip him & mandate a 17th Baloyi-Klassen fight for the vacant strap.

Would hope this pulls off after Burns' next voluntary. Although the division is not the best at the moment, it could become white hot in the not too distant future with the likes of Lopez and Gamboa at feather who I'd imagine will move up at some point (sure I saw something somewhere saying that Lopez was considering moving up and had Burns as a target - cant remember where though!)

Hi Scott,

I might be very wrong - a couple of google questions show that I could be, but I'm just going over this old article shown on the OP of this old boxrec thread.

http://boxrec.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f ... g#p1381066

On Nov. 22, Hatton (44-1, 31 KOs), coming off a less-than-stellar showing against Juan Lazcano, and Malignaggi (25-1, 5 KOs), ditto on an unimpressive last fight, will fight for the IBO and newly-sanctioning Ring magazine’s versions of the junior welterweight championship. The fight takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, and will be televised by “free” HBO.

-------
Ring belt was going for years before this so why did this article highlight the words "newly sanctioning". I commented on it on various forums but never got a clear answer and nothing seemed to be mentioned of it since.

perez vs cruz in an eliminator???

think they will need to wait till next year for a shot at burns if hes still the champ as the thai fighter terdsak kotiegym - yes he keeps changing his name is the number 1 contender.

ps: has there been anymore news on burns next fight?? there has been nothing up here in scotland

Not sure what that means Stu, it's phrased really awkwardly. I would think that if they had started charging fees there would have been more of a fuss kicked up about it though.

The handing out of belts went into hibernation for a bit but they brought them out again a few years ago or so. Pretty sure there's no money involved in the form of fees.

It is the ring mag title that looks like a replica of the lonsdale isn't it?

The Ring is not a sanctioning body.
They do not charge fees for their belt.
They do not strip champions or force mandatories.

The first Ring belt was created in 1921 and given to Jack Dempsey.
It's purpose was to symbolise who the "real"/lineal champion was.
With few exceptions has been the case up through history and remains so today.

Maybe I'm biased but I really think Burns could outwork him. Fana isn't a great champion or anywhere near unbeatable but he is tough and a good boxer but I think he could bf beaten and Burns is the man :TU:
