Richie Woodhall last night

One minute he criticises americans for hyping up Mesi, and claims that Audley Harrison and Danny Williams would have no problem with them, and then he's hyping up Greenburg as the future after he got floored. Does Richie beleive that Mesi would have struggled with this opponent?

He also felt, for some reason, certain that Lennox would continue where everything recently has been pointing towards retirement.

I think Richie is the Beebs best pundit, and speaks alot of sense, but he wasn't speaking so much last night.

Anyone agree?

With out a shadow of a doubt I know what you mean, but I felt like applauding Richie for disagreeing with the comments of that awful, hyper and overbearing nit twit from espn who 'big daddy' Bunce had chose to interview for some inexplicable reason. As for Roman, sure he was floored and is very raw but he's still very young so shouldn't be written off... personally I was impressed by his attitude after the fight and he seems a good likeable kid who deserves a bit of luck...

I just found it funny as they dismiss Mesi as a white hope, then start building up Greenburg.

Yeah he has some talent, but i can't see him going that far.

It was a bit silly, especially as greenberg was decked in that fight they showed against a total nonentity to boot.

Greenberg hasn't even proved as much as Mesi, I got the impression that Richie had little choice as Bunce has foisted the greenberg piece on the show.

And what has Mesi proven in his 30 odd fights? The only reason Mesi gets hyped up so much is because hes white.

Mesi has beaten Monte Barrett and DaVarryl Williamson, both of whom are leagues ahead of any opponent greenberg has faced.

I am not saying I rate Mesi, because I dont at all, but I'm agreeing with the point of this thread which is that it is ridiculous to slate Mesi, and then with the next breath start on a drum-banging routine for Roman Greenburg, who hasn't proven shit all.

Going over against a novice journeyman is not a good sign for a heavyweight prospect. Maybe it was a flash knockdown, but there have been rumours of Roman getting sparked in the gym too - maybe that's bullshit, we'll find out for sure when he steps up.
I just have the feeling he wont hold a shot too well when he gets in with the big boys.
On the other hand, even though he was knocked down, I think Mesi looks like he takes a punch reasonably well.
Though he looks too small to be a major player at heavyweight.

It's a bit pointless discussing Mesi v Greenburg right now.

I did think the banter between Greenburg and Buncey was funny though. You don't really get stuff like that on Sky, it's always "I know I've got a long way to go but I'm prepared to make the sacrifices.." etc etc yawwwn.

I reckon some fighters could really help themselves by trying to develop a sense of humour that appeals to the general public. It doesn't have to mean acting like a clown.

Give Greenberg time, he may develop into a nice little fighter, he had a recent article in Boxing Monthly and his trainer said he was the most talented fighter he had ever worked with (cliche) so he must have something going for him. A flash knockdown is not the end of the world but i must confess that given the level of opposition and the fact there are stories from the gym suggesting he has chin problems it may be more worrying. The reason BBC were using "Double Standards" by hyping Roman yet demeaning Mesi appears simple to me, Greenberg is more likely going to be fighting a lot more on the beeb and theres a chance he will be headlining somewhere down the line while Mesi is an American shown now and again who has no connections to the BBC. They couldn't care less about Mesi but they are not going to talk down Greenberg who is going to be featured by them more often than Baby Joe in the future. In other words you don't see SKY talking down there fighters do you? The BBC are obviously going to use Greenberg in the future on there cards.

And on the subject of Greenberg's size, i agree he looks a little small and lean for a heavy to me.

He's not huge.

Well said about the BBC. They wont feature a kid, then slag him of. It would be a bit stupid if they did.

I know Roman reasonably well and he stands about a shade under 6'3" and weighs 225. He's only 21 so he might grow to 235 which is what a prime Riddick Bowe weighed.

If he were 250+ his assets, speed of hand and foot, cunning and hand to eye coordination would greatly diminish.

Romans size is his strength. He has what a lot of white athletes lack; fast twitch muscles.

There have been reports about his chin, but none of them confirmed. On the contrary Ive seen him humiliate guys like Michael Sprott in the gym and he also gave Audley loads of problems in three rounds when Roman had only just turned pro weighing 215.

Consider this: when he got decked in his last fight he got hit with much better shots in the same fight but didnt even flinch. Personally I think he had an off night, had done no sparring at all (because of a hand injury) and couldnt properly throw the right hand. He looked a bit sluggish and certainly much slower than in previous fights. Put it down to an off night and being off balance.

Even the best have them.

What we have to remember is that Roman is YEARS younger than any of these other prospects.

One thing is for sure, Roman is a very proud man and the knockdown and general performance would have hurt his pride.

You can be sure that he will take out his frustration on whoever he fights next.
