Honestly, I think Burns is a top bloke with limited ability and I don't begrudge him the chance to make some regular good money as I don't think it will last that long.
Not an inspiring opponent, though

If Burns fights Fana later in the year then this is an acceptable keep busy fight. It is not a very interesting fight though.

Saw it coming a mile off and said so at the time. Laryea looked pretty good but Warren is doing his utmost to keep the title with soft defences like always does. Makes business sense but is very uninspiring for the boxing fan.

Bit low key but the guy looks dangerous enough and if he can beat appleby he's good enough to be in the top 3-4 in the UK. I don't begrudge any 'almost gimme's' Ricky gets his oppostion has been fairly capable throughout his career so cashing in a little as champion is thoroughly deserved. I think he beats Fana easily too- so he might end the year as a unified champ.

This is what is wrong with boxing; paper champions fighting paper challengers.

Total Joke - Burns world champion whenhe is fighting nobodies and blown up featherweights? Dont make me laugh - once he fightsa half decent pressure fighter he can kiss the WBO belt good bye

Also said that Kell Brook obviously won't get Pacman this year, but will get a world title shot next, so why isn't Frank aiming for the other champs this year?

Alittle surprised, to be honest, I mean I've have seen allegedly's work for a longtime and genuinely thought Burns next challenger was going to be Appleby. Allegedly has never let a minor blip get in the way of making ££££'s.

However, flipside is that because Appleby got so thoroughly pounded, Fwank must've have figured it probably wouldn't make alot of financial sense to go for that, or, maybe Appleby and his team possbily declined, given the schellacking he took, figuring, at the moment, he would receive another dose so maybe better to wait.

I suppose, this way, Burns (good fighter and decent guy) gets another notch on his belt, a few quid in the bank and allegedly can reap some more £££'s holding the fight north of the border.

Remote possibility is that Burns could lose, too, either way though, nice little earner all round which is fair enough.

Fair enough an easier opponent on paper for a nice few quid. Why not, the kid has done well and deserves a payday without having a war. However someone who dont look that good on paper can come up with a surprise. Laryea will be coming to win.

Think of it as a non title fight. I do. Champions used to have loads of them in the old days. Nothing wrong with this fight.

So that would be two in a row, would it? Combined with the murderer's row of top contenders Ricky fought on the way to the ti-- oh.

Hang on a second...

I'm disappointed by the announcement of this fight but it's acceptable if it's just a marking time fight and gets a unification fight with Fana after it. I like champions keeping busy and you can't fight the best all the time, SFW Is a fairly weak division there isn't many fights he could take as keep busy fights to be fair. Hopefully though he pushes on after this fight and gets either Fana or Baloyi/Mendez (Mendez would be a bad fight to take IMO)

remember burns mandatory fight might change as the thai fighter might go for the wbc title and the wbo have already set up an eliminator between perez and cruz in march

Burns should do him, not a great match.... and dissapointing coming off the last fight - which wasn't acceptable.

The fact he beat Paul Appleby means nothing. Paul Appleby was comprehensively beaten in a British title fight against a man who has just got beaten. He shouldn't be near world title level.

i agree stujones

hopefully we will get a look at the perez vs cruz fight in march as the wbo have ordered them as an eliminator , the thai guy must have told the wbo that hes going for the wbc title

any idea when the new wbo ranking come out?

Agree with all of this. SFW is a pretty poor division. Speaks volumes that the no.1 guy was dismissed in 2 by a post prime Barrera and easily beaten by former british champ Dean "Pitbull" Pithie. Burns has done fantastically well to win the WBO title and I think he can still improve from a technical standpoint. He's got a good chance at unifying for sure.

In agreement with most of the above comments, shit fight, warren will no doubt be ripping off the paying public again by building this challenger up into something he's not.

And it really annoys me, all these comments about how Burns (or any other Champion for that matter) deserves an easy touch after a hard fight, or he's a nice kid, can't begrudge him a big pay day etc.

It's a fuckin disgrace, he's a fighter, when people pay to see him he should be having a fight, not a one sided beat down against someone who has done nothing to earn a shot. This is being passed off as World Championship boxing when in reality, its hardly worthy of a Commonwealth title.

Mr W arren is the best promoter by some considerable distance - I see this thread is yet another slating his qualities as Europe's Number 1.

Yes Mr W arren protects his fighters - yes Mr W arren gets his fighters the right fights for the maximum possible gain for both the fighter and the business - but surely you will concede thats what Boxing Promoting is all about.

You conveniently forget he still puts on the biggest shows with the quality fights on so many occasions that very few others are capable of doing so.

Its a pants fight and a potential banana skin, simply a yard stick to measure against a lack lustre Appleby. The African is tough and Burn's is no knock out artist and thus has W12 all over it.

That said, if it can earn Ricky a few quid and give him another run out, then it makes sense to him.

But honestly as a fight fan, it's a resounding thumbs down from me on an 'interest level'. But it's a case of who else right now instead ? not much to pick from.

Its an obvious one to make.

Mr W arren will make some money for his promotional team and Ricky Burns will get another pay day against an opponent he should beat comfortably if he belongs in world class company.

It's a really crap fight.

Burns knocked over a top 3 opponent to win the WBO title, then had a first defence against a domestic level fighter.... and now another?

It's not good enough, we should want (and demand) our champions face the best opposition available, which in this division ain't much at all. Give Martinez a rematch, or fight Fana, but please...... no more meaningless defences.

I like Ricky and Billy, but if you want to call yourself a world champion you've got to face world class opponents. This bloke might have beaten Appleby but any of the domestic top half dozen would have done too, Paul was crap that night.... end of story.

Not good enough. Sort it out asap.
