Top ten greatest modern heavyweight fights....

Post by silkov »

The heavies have such a history for great matches that it's hard to choose any top ten really... so one of the stipulations Ive made for this list is that all these fights are ones that I have seen either on Tv or Video...
1. Muhammad Ali vs George Foreman...... a performance of genius by Ali to ko the invincible Foreman.
2. Muhammad Ali vs Joe Frazier 3... the most savage Heavyweight championship fight ever...
3. Muhammad Ali vs Joe Frazier 1.... Frazier's greatest performance...
4. Evander Holifield vs Riddick Bowe 2
5. George Foreman vs Ron Lyle
6. Ken Norton vs Larry Holmes
7. Rocky Marciano vs Joe Wallcott
8. Joe Louis VS Billy Conn
9. Ezra Sellers vs Alex Stewart
10. Ron lyle vs Earnie Shavers
............obviously I'd like to see other peoples lists, theres bound to be some very different views out there!.......

Thats a pretty good list, although I'd probably scratch off the bottom two and place Holyfield vs Bowe 1 and maybe Tyson vs Holyfield 1 (Lewis vs Holyfield II is a contendor).

Good list but....Ezra Sellers?! Puleeeze! :D Stick Tyson v Douglas in there instead - it belongs as it's probably the greatest upset of all time and was a truly exciting fight to see - as no-one could believe what they were seeing.
Holmes v Cooney was a pretty good one too - the anticipation for that one was out of this world, and Cooney put up a good show in the end.

I'd have top 4:

1. Ali v Frazier 1 - THE FIGHT - The whole world was watching two undefeated champs battle it out - what a fight it was too.
2. Ali v Foreman - A magical night. Minutes after it ended the heavens opened and a torrential storm washed away the ring.
3. Ali v Frazier - got to be there I suppose - though I find it had to watch as the punishment these two aging warriors take is just brutal.
4. Holmes v Norton - Fantastic fight - 15th round was round of the year.

True the Sellers vs Stewart fight was not full of class but for sheer drama, action and out and out toe to toe mayhem it's one of the best fights I ve ever seen at Heavyweight.... the Lyle vs Shavers fight is very simular.... but with more class.... both these fights are 'cousins' of the Foreman vs Lyle war which gets plenty of praise while these two fights (which are arguebly more exciting) are often ignored......

Gotta list Ali-Frazier I & III, Ali-Foreman, Holmes-Norton, Douglas-Tyson, Foreman-Lyle, Louis-Schmeling II, Clay-Liston I, Holyfield-Tyson I, Louis-Conn I.

Why was Louis-Schmeling II a greater fight than the first bout? Greater for Louis fans and Americans in those dark days just before WW2, yes, but whether it was a greater bout in terms of drama is questionable.

Theres little doubt that Louis vs Schmeling 1 was a vastly superior fight to the rematch. Their 2nd fight was a great performance by Louis but as a competitive fight it was a flop..... great performance by Louis, though Schmeling was not the fighter he had been when the two had previously met.

Ali-Frazier (3/8/71) HAD to be the greatest fight, all things considered...if the fight itself wasn't the absolute best action fight (and it really wasn't), the pre fight hype MORE than made up for it. This was the one boxing match (in my lifetime, anyway) that EVERYONE was aware of. Two undefeated, undisputed Heavyweight Champions (Almost impossible to re-create a situation that duplicates that.) You didn't have to be a boxing fan, or even a sports fan in general...you KNEW about it...not to mention the political overtones at a time when our country was very much divided on the Viet Nam war. All anti-war people had adopted Ali as a hero and the older, more conservative element had adopted Frazier (at least for the day) as their hero...hoping that he would 'shut up the loud-mouthed draft dodger'...

As an Ali fan, and a liberal college student of draft age, I can't tell you how utterly disappointed I felt after watching the fight on closed circuit in a sports arena...I never felt as bad before or since about the outcome of a sporting event...although after watching the Ali-Bonavena fight the previous December, I knew Ali was going to have a rough time...the Bonevena fight revealed the loss of perpetual motion foot movement (Ali's trademark before the exile) as well as a loss of 'timing' when throwing combinations...missing more often than ever before...

Ali-Frazier I is also the only fight that I can remember, that they played the highlights of at the movie theaters...I vaguely remember the movies showing about half of the rounds (the rounds with the bulk of the action) for weeks after the fight...I didn't go to the movies to see the highlights...I was still depressed.... :( :( :(

Funny thing though...I lived in Pittsburgh at the time, and I remember Billy Conn & Fritzie Zivic being interviewed in the newspaper about the fight...both of them giving SCATHING reviews...they didn't like the action, they didn't like Ali, they belittled Frazier...Conn said something to the effect that 'Joe Louis was ten times the fighter of either of them'...(I always thought Conn & Zivic's biggest problem was jealousy in that Ali & Frazier both got $2.5 million)...the newspapers also 'editorialized' that Ali would never beat Frazier in a rematch  , as he would never regain his old foot speed...and that Joe Frazier was unbeatable for years to come...

Except they didn't realize that this was Frazier's finest hour, and that would never fight at quite that level again...

Sports Illustrated cover shot was the picture of Frazier following through with the 15th round left hook with Ali falling backwards on his way to the floor with the caption, "The end of the Ali legend"...

On the inside of the magazine where the article covering the fight was, there was a full page picture of Frazier's face immediately after the fight captioned, "The battered face of a winner"...Joe looked more like a loser in that picture, face all covered with lumps & swelling...

All in all...one hell of a fight with UNMATCHED pre fight hype & interest...

TOP FIVE
1. JOE FRAZIER vs Ali I.... will go down as the greatest left hook ever thrown by a heavyweight in the history of boxing. Also I think i can speak for everyone that no heavyweight fight compares to JOE FRAZIER I.
2. KEN NORTON vs Ali I ..... great fight to watch.
3. KEN NORTON vs Ali II ..... another great fight to watch
4. LEON SPINKS vs Ali ..... biggest upset of a champion in history of boxing but still in top five.
5. LARRY HOLMES vs Ali ..... big dose of woop ass from Easton PA. brilliant performance.

Anybody who considers Holmes-Ali or Ali-Spinks two of the greatest fights doesn't have very high standards for 'great fights'...great fights are supposed to be close & competitive, with the outcome in doubt...Ali-Spinks was an over weight, under trained old man against a novice who got lucky (that his opponent wasn't prepared)...Holmes-Ali was one of the best heavyweights of all time (Holmes) against a fossil...how the hell is that a great fight??? Now if the Larry Holmes of 1980 met the Muhammad Ali of 1967...now THAT would be a great fight!

I think you mean "Top five fights for an Ali hater." The sad, sad spectacle that was Holmes/Ali a better fight than (say) the Thrilla in Manila? Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuure it was...now be good and take your afternoon tranquilizers - remember, Thorazine is your friend...

what? no mention of holyfield v cooper? for shame!

PS holyfield v tyson? that fight was a boring hugfest. if you took out the sheer sight of what was actually occuring in the ring (ie holyfield out-manning tyson) it really is just a dull practice in breaking a bully down.
