Trainer sues King!
By Lisa Scott
Hector Perez, the former trainer of world welterweight champion Ricardo Mayorga, has filed a $10 million racial discrimination lawsuit in San Antonio, Texas against promoter Don King and his son Carl King of Monarch Sports Management. The suit alleges that as Mayorga's stock began to rise, the Kings conspired to fire Perez and replace him with Emanuel Steward. The suit also states that Perez has not received payment for his services for the nearly two years that he worked with Mayorga. Glenn Levy, Perez's attorney told Fightnews, "Mr. Perez feels strongly that he was discriminated against when, against his wishes, the Kings placed Stacey McKinley, who is African-American, to assist him in training Mayorga. Then, Don and Carl negotiated with Steward behind my client's back and fired him. Mr. Perez trained Mayorga when he was an unknown fighter and brought him to the level of where he is now - a world champion. My client has not been paid for doing so, nor has he been paid any future training money that he might have been owed." The lawsuit comes on the eve of Mayorga's bout against IBF champ, Corey Spinks. For this fight, Mayorga's chief second is Stacey McKinley but his principle trainer is Rigoberto Garibaldi of Panama. King, who is promoting a show in Atlantic City tonight, was not immediately available for comment.
