@davidcoldwell The net is full of dicks that have never thrown a punch in their lives but think they know it all about our sport. #armchair ..... just saw this on smiths twitter account @davidcoldwell "I'm a fan, I pay your wages!" No you're not a fan, you're a critic. Burns my cap out. Boxers deserve respect. All boxers

Re: paul smith
Someone's been pissing off Paul Smith and Dave Coldwell. It happens. It must be hard to take all the criticism when you're in the limelight.
Re: paul smith
The defeats cut well deep, lets hope he gets himself going again
Re: paul smith
Yep sounds like he is suffering a bit still after the defeat. Good lad Smigga, always comes across top on here, end of the day there's always dicks and keyboard warriors on forums, so long as you can take 'em with a pinch of salt then it's all fine isn't it.
Re: paul smith
Well ultimately Paul's decision. I remain convinced should he decide to post again he would have a great reception. He gave it his all against Degale, nobody can fault the effort and I think the move back down to Middle is a really good one.

Re: paul smith
I like Paul Smith, he is a sensitive and intelligent guy who doesn't like people digging him out, which is fair enough but if you going to come on a forum - especially one like eastside or DHB then you are going to get dug out. 'You can't please all of the people all of the time' never a truer word has been said. I always thought Paul got a decent hearing on here and a lot of boxers who post are recipients of the 'boxrec bounce' the latest being Big Larry but why not? He is a nice guy and I do hope he bounces back from the weekend. So this place certainly isn't a snake pit for any pro daring to make themselves known.
I have to say, I was the person responsible for the 'I/we pay your wages' barb. The facts are it's the truth, the facts are if it wasn't for our interest and our money, there would be no professional version of this sport. It is a pollyanna world view that the arseholes are all on the forums giving professionals grief but the 'real fans' who turn in week in and week out are salt of the earth - if you ask John Barnes about the times he was monkey chanted by thousands of people week in and week out in various ground around the country - the people there had never been on a website in their life (at that point) the facts are that we here are a microism of a larger community and our views are going to be held right across that community - the good and the bad.
Also, a fan can be a critic - why can't that be? I am glad we have discerning people on here who know what a good fight is and what is worth watching, what is not and will say so.
Paul - I hope to see you back on here, I like reading your posts, but remember this - outside your family, we are the only people on the world wide web who give a shit about what you do as regards your career. That is why you (and people in the game more celebrated than your good self) come on here - that is why you all come on here. If you really want an ass kissing jamboree on here then I would be the first one to leave and never look back, and then eventually all you would have left on here is you and all the other 'people in the game' who can tell each other how great you are in an ego stroking buttfest! But I don't think that's what you want is it?
Like the politicians who slate their constituents off - but when it comes to election time, they are banging on every door trying to win every vote off the people they despise. The same with any sport - no fans, no sport.

Re: paul smith
Yeah Paul, I hope you come back too, you are a class act
Re: paul smith
If he doesn't come back on here I don't blame him. He gets some unneccessary shit on here. You don't have to like him but I think we all appreciate having access to people who are in the industry, and we might lose it due to a few idiots.
Re: paul smith
? I've never seen a board more supportive of our boxers or balanced in criticism.winkveron wrote:If he doesn't come back on here I don't blame him. He gets some unneccessary shit on here. Re: paul smith
On the whole mate, I agree. But there are a few people on here who have personal agendas and give him a lot of unwarranted stick. Like I said, it's a minority but I can see why he may think 'you know what, I can't be arsed'. I like Smith and think it's a shame, but I don't blame him for not posting on here just due to the few idiots.Scottrf wrote:? Always good to have boxers posting on here, whatever are opinons are on them.. He always comes across well on here..
Re: paul smith
well without the boxing fans boxers wouldnt get half the amount of money they do so in theory boxing fans do pay there wages
Re: paul smith
You are letting them win if you take it to heart, some people just look for a reaction. I guess if he sees it as doing a favour, a few people may make him feel that it isn't appreciated. But I'd expect him to be thicker skinned than that, the vast majority complimented Paul but just said DeGale looked excellent.winkveron wrote:On the whole mate, I agree. Does that mean that we can give them shit over a boxing forum, sometimes not related to boxing? They don't have to come on here.fasteddie wrote:well without the boxing fans boxers wouldnt get half the amount of money they do so in theory boxing fans do pay there wages
Personally, I'm grateful to anyone in the industry who posts on here, be it a cutsman, world champ or journalist. It gives us a insight into the sport we may not otherwise get.

Re: paul smith
What unneccessary shit does he get on here? Robplamer135? Hurlock? Everytime it has happened the posters involved trying to dig out Smith were flamed by the boxrec community. This place is hardly eastside which Paul Smith has attested to.winkveron wrote:If he doesn't come back on here I don't blame him. He gets some unneccessary shit on here. If Paul actually said this, what he is saying is that we are not his equals and we are not in a position to criticize him or make any kind of comment he deems as offensive - well that is not right either. I personally (and everyone has their opinion) don't want industry people on here if they are to become sacred cows that think they should be beyond (fair) criticism. I take more offence that Smith has stated this boxing is 'their' sport and thus he and an whoever else is part of his exclusive circle have ownership which we have no entitlement to which I find personally galling.

Just for the record, I sent a PM to Paul Smith congratulating on his guts, toughness and bravery that he shown in his fight with Degale - he has yet to read it and I hope one day he does.
Re: paul smith
Smith handled himself very well on here. There were a few that loved it that he would get back at em and they got a bit giddy. He struck me as having a clear idea about himself and didn't seem right thin skinned. It were good to read what he had to say + he was up under his name, everyone knew who he was so he weren't sneaky.

Re: paul smith
You need to define 'shit over a boxing forum' if he wants people to revere him - well most of us on here are fully grown men, not teenage girls - he should have joined Take That if he wanted hero worship and to be revered! I have gone past the hero worship of a boxer when Frank Bruno retired. Sorry - this is a forum where differing opinions get debated. I don't care if you are Jesus Christ son of God - if you can't handle that premise then don't log on.winkveron wrote:Does that mean that we can give them shit over a boxing forum, sometimes not related to boxing? Re: paul smith
Offering an opinion and criticism is valid, to be honest a couple went past offering opinion or perspective and went into plain disrespect or personal insult. There's a difference; I'd not enjoy it if someone I'd not met in person were entirely negative about me or overly insulting. we are all offering points of view. Some of the posters on here have massive knowledge and inside information; I don't always share their point of view but disrespecting them because of that just seems juvenile and rude. Paul Smith is a high level, successful boxer, he does deserve respect (but not idolisation) he is a sportsman, not a God. He didn't seem to mind the disagreement aspect I imagined it was the personal disrespect.
Re: paul smith
I would suggest Smith won more fans on here than he ever lost in 'arguments' or whatever. So in that way it's a positive thing, it got the hardcore boxing fans taking more notice of him as we got to know him a bit on here. Not a bad thing at all if you can 'ignore the haters' as the yanks would say.
Re: paul smith
Most of the disagreement(s) seemed to come about from the level he was being pitched at by the posters. I don't remember Smith saying much about that other than defending himself from criticism, which he's perfectly entitled to do and I think most people would.simon fox wrote:Offering an opinion and criticism is valid, to be honest a couple went past offering opinion or perspective and went into plain disrespect or personal insult. I think the majority had respect for Smith due to the way he conducted himself and the person he was and it's often quite hard to be objective about picking a winner or an outcome without having to forget all that. I noticed a slight shift as it got nearer and nearer the DeGale fight with far more people actually picking Smith to lose and get stopped late.
I decided not to commit to writing what I thought the result would be (although discussed it with some on here) because I felt it just wasn't worth the potential aggro with pro Smith fans/posters defending why they felt Smith would win etc etc. I'm not a huge fan of his style (I've seen him live twice I think and a car breakdown stopped me a 3rd time) but respect him as poster and respect him even more for doing what very few people on here will never do and he's certainly achieved more than the majority ever will [in boxing terms].
Re: paul smith
no it doesnt mean we give them stick but what im saying is if boxers dont like what people put on forums id stay away from them, but as you say then the real boxing fans lose out cause of itwinkveron wrote:Does that mean that we can give them shit over a boxing forum, sometimes not related to boxing? Re: paul smith
to me it sounds like sour grapes from smith, as the simple fact is, were he to win or had a closer fight against degale he would have been on this site within a few days of the bout, thanking everyone for their comments and basically loving the attention............ but who could blame him.
Re: paul smith
Being in the "limelight" is a double edged sword - however those who promote themselves on social media must be prepared for the other side of the coin when things don't go to plan.Asterix wrote: It must be hard to take all the criticism when you're in the limelight.
My own opinion is that Smith did not come across well in many of his posts and could often be defensive, argumentative and rude.
Tony Bellew has enjoyed a couple of good years as he boxes lesser opposition, he has enjoyed the plaudits but does not seem to be able to accept negative comments.
Re: paul smith
??? Bellew has always been good so far, when people have criticised he doesn't usually bite and seemed to agree that he needed to make defensive improvements.bripez wrote:Asterix wrote:
