Hearns vs Robinson at Welter

Post by Grimm »

Now I'm sure most of you will pick Robinson straight away calling it a mismatch. But Leonard fought Hearns with a great game plan and tired Hearns out first. I'm not sure Robinson would do this. I could see him going bombs away and getting tagged a lot in the process. I see Hearns winning a close decision here.

Quite frankly, if were talking Sugar Ray Robinson at welterweight, I don't believe anyone could beat him.

My opinion: Hearns was a hell of a boxer with big punching power. I don't necessarily think Hearns had a weak chin, but if he couldn't take the best of his era he wouldn't survive Sugar Ray Robinson. It might be interesting for a few rounds but I just can't see Hearns winning this one.

It would a pleasure to watch two supreme craftsmen at work but I can't see how Hearns could manage to stand up to Sugar Ray's power, whereas I think Robinson is one of the few at Welterweight who could stand up to Tommy's, that's the difference.

Two perfect offensive machines, I have to go with the guy with the better chin. No doubt Tommy would be a problem, but Robinson would solve it.

I like SRR by late stoppage in a 15rd'er. In a 10 rd fight, I think the Hitman has a decent chance at an upset.

I see Hearns' jab and height giving Sugar Ray some problems in the early going similar to how he did Leonard. Possibly dropping Robinson at some point, but I think Robinson would break him down with bodyshots and adjust to what was in front of him and gradually start tagging Hearns cleanly more and more often eventually stopping him some time after the 9th round.

Robinson takes this, stopping Hearns by around the 11th after a grueling back-and-forth slugging/boxing match I actually think Hearns would have a better shot at MW, where he really came into his own while Robinson I'd say was only modestly improved by comparison.

I agree DW, it would be a gruelling, gruelling fight. SRR is only a handful of guys who could take the right.

You would say Robinson... But then again you would pick Robinson over anybody.

But worsefighters than Hearns have beaten Sugar Ray on certain fights. So it's a fight that Hearns can win. :TU:

Robinson's chin was phenomenal. I could certainly see Hearns knocking him down, perhaps more than once, but I can't really see any welterweight knocking him out.

Hearns had an average chin, and considering Robinson's punching power, accuracy and handspeed, I just can't see him making the full 15 rounds. It would be a competitive fight while it lasted and Hearns would have had a chance if Robinson gave a sub-par performance.

Overall, I'll take Robinson to win by a 9th round knockout, Robinson knocked down in the 3rd, Hearns once in the 9th. Scorecards just about even at the time of stoppage.

Really? Name a welterweight who defeated Robinson when Sugar Ray was campaigning in that division . . .

In his Prime, which was at Welter, Ray Robinson is the best fighter, EVER!

No other fighter in history, at Welter, would have beaten Robinson!

I'd love to see the Servo fight, there are people that thought Marty beat him. But I believe that was only 10 rounds.

I don't know of any. Seriously, NO ONE beats a prime Robinson at welterweight.

Nobody would be favored over him. But if he fought them all he would lose some. Leonard matches up well with him. The Duran that fought Leonard could beat him. Langford wouldn't be an easy fight for anybody. Napoles, Basilio, Griffith and Hearns aren't guaranteed wins for anybody. Including SRR

Not at welterweight. The great Sugar Ray Robinson at welterweight never lost a fight. And the fight that he lost was against a great middleweight named Jake LaMotta. Although, I believe that the great Kid Gavilan beat Robinson twice.

I pick Robinson, Gavilan and the great Carmen Basilio beating the great Thomas Hearns at welterweight. Robinson would take Tommy's best shots and dish some of his own a la Hagler-Hearns. Robinson by TKO in 9 or later

That Basilio-Hearns fight would sure be something at 147lbs. Saad?

50/50 for me, Tommy early and Carmen late. Basilio was as tough as they come, so were Duran and, to a lesser extent, Cuevas. But Basilio would be knee deep down the stretch.

...robinson by kayo.....and not because i think hearns would be so likely to give robonson a fight....just the opposite...hearns had height and reach and a terrific punch...which would bring out the best in robinson, who would therefore go for a knockout as quickly as possible. when he was in against a threat he didn't fool around.

salsa...gavilan did not beat srr twice. just the opposite. the fought two fast tempo fights but robinson was decidedly superior in both.

As much as I like Hearns, Robinson is the 2nd worst kind of opponent for him (after Hagler at 160).

SRR had no weaknesses whatsoever & would stop a tiring Hearns late on
