Does anyone else fancy Groves over DeGale?

Post by Lightsoot »

I know there remains some confusion as to whether DeGale vs Groves will go ahead and when, but if it happens is there anyone on the forum who genuinely believes that Groves will win? If so, I'd be interested in hearing everyone's views.

My personal gut feeling is that Groves will prevail. I think that DeGale was somewhat flattered by his victory against Paul Smith who had hardly shone in his previous fights and so it came as no surprise to me when DeGale beat Smith with something to spare. It's what I expected, but not necessarily because I'm convinced that DeGale is going all the way to the top. In contrast, perhaps Groves didn't get the credit he deserved for battling back to overcome Kenny Anderson though clearly George looks worryingly open defensively. I'd argue though that both Anderson and Charles Adamu (both stopped by Groves) would give DeGale a harder night' work than Smith was able to do.

Groves will force DeGale to fight at pace and exert far more pressure on him than Smith was able to. It will be interesting to see how DeGale copes with this intensity, whether he'll start making mistakes and get dragged into a brawl with a (possibly) harder puncher. I wouldn't rule out a DeGale win, particularly early, as Groves is wide open and there to be cracked with the uppercut as he comes in, but I lean towards a Groves points win.

Does anyone agree?

i would be very surprised if groves won. given he struggled against kenny anderson who is a lot slower than degale, i think degale will stop him inside 6

Generally speaking, I'll always pick the compact fighter over the wide open one, so I go DeGale

Degale looks solid as well as being dangerous on the attack. I feel he'll catch Groves with the overhand right, probably quite early, and then jump on him until the ref calls it off.

DeGale certainly hasn't fought anyone as good as Groves in the pro ranks, and visa versa. The only thing that makes me lean towards DeGale is I think his defence is much better.

Groves has been on the canvass a couple of times, but if anything I think this might work in his favour. Also, I'm not sure DeGale has the 'one punch' power to take out Groves, whereas I think Groves is a much harder puncher. 60/40 for DeGale, but I'm anticipating a right old tear up.

What exactly has dented your confidence in degale after watching his last fight,I thought he took the p*ss from start to finish, yeah he switched off and got clipped a couple of times but that's always likely to happen in a keep busy warm up fight.

it will be like haye v maccarinelli all over again. loads of hype before, people split between who will win, and then degale will be all over him like a raincoat.. i think chunky is a special talent, i used to hate him as well, thought he was a bighead, but he has the skills to back up his claims, I like that in a boxer.

Groves is too easy to hit, he probably has a bigger punch but apart from that Degale is better in every department. Degale will easily hit Groves and i dont think he will be able to cope with the pressure. Degale in 8

Degale will be too fasy for him, the ref will jump in and stop it during the middle rounds.
I do like Groves but he has no defence and is a little slow

No, I don't agree any more. I was shocked at the ease Degale beat Smith, who imo is leagues above Adamu and better than Anderson. I was also impressed by the fact Degale only got hit clean once or twice in the whole fight while landing at will on Smith. I was also impressed with Degale's composure and ability to fight at pace throughout the fight without showing the slighest hint of tiredness, which was even more surprising given it was his first 12 rounder.Degale's accuracy is also excellent.

Groves is good no doubt about it, but defensively he's not good enough yet. He has better power than Degale, but won't be able to land it on Degale. Degale will pick Groves apart and stop him within 7-8 rounds imo.

You could argue that groves has had the tougher fights and degales had it easier but to me it looks like groves has been forced into 4th gear a few times, degale relaxes and controls fights in 2nd gear,I really don't think we've seen degale anywhere near his best yet that's why I make him a big favourite.

You think Anderson is better than Smith, cause there wasn't much between Anderson and Groves.

as someone suggested above, what impressed me most about Degale vs Smith was his poise, both before and during the fight, in what was an extremely partisan atmosphere. one which, dare I say, many fighters would have ended up being intimidated or put off their game.

Mark- no way is this 50/50, IMO.

i say 50/50 now but i see Degale winning it but not as one sided as some are suggusting as Groves will bring a few things to the ring he hasnt come up against yet. IMO Degale has the ability to go all the way and become a superstar. I always thought the Smith fight would be a one sided as Smith's style was suited to the way Degale fights and add this to Smith's previous below par performences and size difference in doesnt look so great in hindsight, a good win yes but a win i would of expect Groves to have as well. THis fight is 2 unbeaten, young rivals on the way up and should be a cracker with both men giving everything to keep that 0
fair enough. i think Groves has more chance than Smith did of landing a 'bingo' equaliser, but that's about as far as I would go.....

Groves looks to me to be a very unpleaseant body puncher, and he has quick enough hands to get his shots off. Have we seen Degale tested yet, whats he gonna be like when Groves puts it on him. Smith was always an easy fight, when it first was annonced I had Degale via 'Brutal Ownage' so what transpired didn't surprise me

Groves is a different kettle and he 'd obliterate Smith eevn quicker in my opinion. I want Degale to prevail but the bookies likely will not get my money for this one

Who wins? The fans!! There is about a 0% chance of this fight not being great

I'm not getting where you are coming from. I saw plenty between Anderson and Groves. Anderson punched himself out in the first four rounds, and took a fair pasting in round 6. I'd had groves two rounds up even with the knockdown.

I'd pick DeGale all day long over Groves at this stage in their careers. I learnt towards Groves when they were just starting out but DeGale has progressed more for me.
