Larry Holmes v Roy Williams

Post by witherspoon »

Can anyone tell me if there exists any footage of this fight?
I have been trying to get a hold of this fight and have been informed that no footage exists, although I am sure that it was featured in the Holmes edition of the 'Beyond The Glory' documentary.
Anyone?

I remember seeing literally 10 seconds of it on a preview for I think Holmes-Norton, it was on the undercard of Ali v Young so it was defeinitely filmed, but almost impossible to get hold of it seems.

Larry Holmes vs Roy"Tiger"Williams was one of the preliminaries
on the Muhammad Ali vs Jimmy Young title fight
on a ABC network prime time show
Night of the Heavyweights.
April.30.1976
The final preliminary was Ken Norton vs Ron Stander.
I remeber watching Norton fight and Ali too of course.
I may have come home late and missed the Larry Holmes fight.
which Im pretty sure had also been aired.
Those shows were like 3 hours long on prime time network on ABC.
This was in 1976 a few years before VCR's and video-tape were affordable
to the average middle class and low-income boxing fans to record fights off of television.

This fight in full is out on the 'elite collector's' market but is being jealously guarded by the people who have it, for reasons that make no real sense . . . .

Meaning, it exists. I know of a couple of collectors who have it. But they are not releasing it to what I guess I'd call the 'open' boxing tape trader market. Either they are charging ridiculous sums for it or just keeping it out of pure selfishness.

My attitude, is . .if you have some master copy, keep it. Make copies. There is no value to a copy. Copies of old fights should be distributed freely to all who wish to view it. It belongs to history.

Brutu, I think you may be mistaken about Holmes-Williams having been televised on ABC during the Ali-Young telecast. I was just a wee lad of 15 watching my second or third full fight card at the time, so I could be wrong. But, the only fight I recall being shown on the undercard was Norton-Stander.

I don't remember seeing Larry Holmes on it watching the event, but I dont think I even knew who Larry Holmes was in 1976.
According to the television schedules of April.30.1976,Holmes vs Williams was to be the first bout shown on the ABC
3 fight card that evening.
Did you live on the West Coast?
Perhaps that may be a reason it may have not been shown.

I think Roy Tiger Williams vs Greg Johnson may have been a televised
preliminary to Michael Spinks vs Mike Summerhays and the main event was
Leon Spinks vs Scott LeDoux on the CBS Sports Spectacular
October.22.1977,but im not sure.I didnt see the show back then.
John Tate vs Lou Esa was also on the card and CBS may have shown
that one instead.
Originally the main event was supposed to have been Bernardo Mercado
vs Greg Johnson but Mercado hurt his hand sparring a week before.
Roy Tiger Williams was Leon Spinks sparring partner at the time and annouced
as a replacement on the card a week before.

Im fairly sure that Roy Williams vs Walter Moore bout
was aired on the same show as
Bernardo Mercado vs Horace Robinson II,on the old
CBS Friday Night Fights show
of February.24.1978.
Back then if you missed it you missed it.)
(I must have been out
In 1978 a home VCR cost around 800 dollars .

There certainly are master copies of Larry Holmes vs Tiger Williams out there. I don't think the fight was broadcast but Cossell called it. Larry himself has a copy.

Larry did make a whopping $3000 for this fight. Probably not one of his biggest paydays. :D

Doesnt sound that bad for a home VCR, unless you consider how much it cost for a home in 1978, compared to today!

800 dollars was the cheapest brand.800 dollars was still a lot of money back in 1978.People wernt use to paying that amount out just for home entertainment.
Injusted for inflation and the lowering of quality in things in general ,I guess 800 dollars for a vcr back in 1978 would be like the equivelent of
paying 9 thousand and 500 dollars for a blue-ray today(excluding tax of course).

I can't even find a "writeup" of the Roy Williams-Walter Moore fight, nonetheless find a clip from it, nonetheless get lucky enough to find the whole fight. Like it never happened.

The price for this fight is really high...if a copy is bought then anyone can make numerous copies and then the price will be nil...meaning once the fight is out certain collectors cant make big money out of it....

Mercado hurting his hand sparring was the official reason by CBS that he was off the card.
But I seem to remember hearing or reading some scuttlebutt not too long after that there was an incident at the Aladdin hotel I think,
were the police were called in and found Mercado(allegedly) hanging his date out of a window by her ankles claiming that she was giving him"Bad Luck".
