Evander Holyfield.

Post by Broc »

I have always admired Evander Holyfield. The man is totally focused, determined and hardworking.

I knew little about his amateur career until the other day when I watched him embarass a string of opponents in the olympics and knocked them all out. Holyfield won a bronze.... I know that there is a contradiction here...he knocked out everyone he faced and yet didnt get a gold??

He knocked out his opponent in the semi final and then as the lad was lying on the floor the Yugoslavian referee disqualified Evander for hitting after he had instructed them to break and stop boxing.
Total bullshit, the fighters were not holding, there was no reason to stop the action. Holyfield was disqualified, his opponent was not allowed to fight in the final, as he had recently been knocked out and the Gold Medal was awarded via walkover.

Guess who won the Gold via walkover ...... the Yugoslavian entry.

I thought lot's of people called him Holly-field. Not that it's important but I always have.
Back to the original statement. I remember the Roy Jones one at the soeul olympics losing in the final to a south korean still the worst decision I have ever seen.

MachoMan09 wrote:Holy' was machine like in LA '84. His left uppercut in his first fight was a peach; as was his right hand to the body, left hook to the chin finish of Barry in the semi. The ref got it wrong.

Kevin Barry, who went on to manage David Tua, knew who really won. He never tried to say anything different.
This should be changed to Kevin Barry who went onto rob David Tua :TU:

Agreed. How they thought they'd get away with that decision beggars belief. Roy smacked the Korean from pillar to post and forced a standing count if I remember, only to lose a 3-2 decision.

Even the south korean crowd were booing - I just checked it on wiki and it says Jones landed 86 to 32, I think that would be a fairly early stoppage these days.

Who was the guy who refused to accept the verdict of the fight and sat on the canvas for hours in protest? I think he was South Korean.
