Mexico & Puerto Rico --- Who Has The One?

Post by Goodnight, Irene »

Nominate your choice for the greatest product from each, and then decide who was the best.

I say Olivares for Mex, Ortiz for PR, and Ortiz gets the nod from me.

Why dont they just forego the pretense of greatness and phrase the poll to reflect the voters?

"Which Rican are you most familiar with?"

Chavez and Ortiz – Chavez is the one. His record, quality of opposition, longevity, among many other things put him at the top.

You must not be too familiar with Ortiz quality of opposition as well as his record because Ortiz has a better resume than Chavez in my opinion. Chavez only thing over Ortiz is longevity. Other than that Ortiz has more HOF on his record than Chavez.

For me the always under-rated Carlos Ortiz

What always surprises me is that when they mention the best among Puerto Ricans nobody ever mentions fighters such as Pedro Montañez and Jose Basora. Basora drew vs a prime Robinson, and has wins over all-time greats like LaMotta, Holman Williams, and Zivic. Also, was a hair away from knocking out Ezzard Charles. To me it seems that Basora is a very under-rated fighter.

I’m very familiar with Ortiz’ quality of opposition. That’s why I pick him over Gomez, Trinidad and Benitez. I still think Chavez’ consistency and other accomplishments rate him above Ortiz.

Amen to Basora & Montanez, & I have made the case for each in the past. Both should be on any Rican all-timers' list worth its salt.

Saldivar and Ortiz. Very close, but I'll take Ortiz narrowly due to versatility.
