Barker-Spada Card Tonight

Post by steve689 »

Any thoughts, tips, predictions? Didn't see a thread knocking around on it. I fancy Barker to win but it will be tough. Spada is no mug.

Sexton on now against Robinson, it's bullshit so far with the gumshield coming out all the time.

Not impressed by Sexton at all. If Jamie Conlan was in there with him then he'd be in big trouble IMO :TU:

Crikey, Sexton's making a right hash of this. No snap in his punches. Looks knackered after 4. 2-2 on my card.

I can't believe they are still hyping Sexton up. He's clearly a one-punch wonder. No plan B if he doesn't bomb his man out.

Definitely. The Uzzy Ahmed highlight reel knockout flattered him IMO. He was "found out" against Bayaar I feel.

Pretty sure the legs went a little spaghetti after that left hook in round 6! Fair play to Sexton he's battling back. Will probably get the decision anyway - wide score too, always the way.

Sexton gets it, or as John Rawling concisely summed it up "it went to Mike Robinson's disappointment"

Not terrible scoring (78-76), but I thought Robinson got three rounds for sure (had it 77-76)......hmmm I'm moaning about 1 point....hangover from the Simpson fight :)

Good fight. Not the best from Sexton at all, Robinson fought well but given that he lost to Burkinshaw I thought Sexton should do a lot better. Good interview afterwards. Would be worth seeing a rematch over 10 or 12, not sure it justifies a title fight but it's a pretty weak division.

Can't disagree with any of that Baboon.

Would like to see Jamie Conlan and Luke Wilton gatecrash this flyweight party.

Well i expect Darren Barker to have a tough night as even though he's technically a good tidy boxer he just isn't a world class Top 10 Middleweight yet and at nearly 30 i don't think he will ever be.

I expect him to squeak by Spada around 7rds to 5 although i wouldn't even be surprised if he gets a controversial decision his way too but i doubt they'll let Spada win.

Having said that if he stops Spada within 10 rds then i'll be impressed and ready to start saying he could be a world class Top 10 middleweight.

Can't see him stopping Spada, if he wins on points it will be an achievement I reckon.

Are SKY giving him a fair hype up or not? When they were banging on about his prodigious talent I was thinking, is he really THAT good? I know they're there to say all that stuff, but I am wondering if he really does fit the bill of a world class middleweight or not.

Hahaa - that made me laugh too!

Interesting to hear the word on the street is Barker loses tonight. Hope he wins convincingly. To me, he has showed he has the tools to go on and fight for a world title.

Nelsons just said the word on the circuit is that barkers gonna lose tonight.
If I was still a gambling man I think I'd be on spada at 5/2

If you'd said that was Nelson's opinion rather than a rumour he picked up I'd be lumping it on Barker :D

Aye, this looks like a potential banana skin for sure, but that's what we're after, fights which could go either way. Barker hasn't got half as much quality on his record as first appears. Belgecham was tough but the fact that Lee toiled against him gave him a higher profile than he deserved.

Good luck to Barker, hope he shows some good stuff out there.

Spada's strong and aggressive while Barker's been one year inactive, including an operation. He'll be blowing out of his arse around the ninth or tenth round.

I reported on that one down in Limerick and Belghecham did zip for 9 rounds and then went for broke in the 10th, rocking Lee a few times. It was pretty standard stuff due to Belghecham's complete lack of any aggression for so long.

***

Barker's jab is doing okay here but Spada is investing plenty into the body. This will be a pure 12-rounder.

I wish they'd make a rule in boxing that 2 boxers can't wear the same colour boxing trunks. Really stupid when this happens as would be so easy to prevent it happening...still remember the David starie vs Calzaghe fight where they both wore black trunks, looked physically alike and became next to impossible to know who was who at times.

Aye, good point Steve, 'toiled' probably suggests a close fight, which I agree it wasn't.

Spada's throwing some wild shots, might take a bit out of him too, there again he's done that pretty much his entire career and seems to have a good tank.

There was a rule at one time. Don't know what has happened to it. I remember Dean Francis getting done by the board for not taking a spare pair of trunks to a fight incase there was a colour clash.
