secondsout alternative awards 2003.

Post by stujones »

Secondsout have set up an alternative awards for 2003. Most are in jest, but some could be discussed.

Here they are.

Roadrunner Award: Derrick ‘I’m so scared of Marquez it physically hurts’ Gainer - I think this is a good call.

Deserves to Succeed Award: The IBO - not sure of this one really

Going in Right Direction Award: The IBF - yes, I don't think its been the best of years for the WBC and as the WBA still continue with the Super title.

Farce of the Year: The row over the result of the Injin Chi v Michael Brodie fight. Good choice, although the ref for Reid vs Ottke and possibly the DLH vs Moseley scoring is worthy of a place.

Scarlet Pimpernel Award: Naseem Hamed. Agreed, although Mike Tyson is worthy of mention.

Titanic ‘Get Out Now or Else Award’: Evander Holyfield. Again can't argue, although Michael Ayers is worthy of a big shout in this category. But on a world front its either Holyfield or Kevin Kelly.

After Show Party Award: Universum (free food, free beer and a German rock band all sporting mullets – who could ask for more?) - sounds pretty good.

Fight Your Fight, Not HBO’s Award: Wladimir Klitschko. Good call, although a similar award could be given to James Hare.

The Clash Should I Stay Or Should I Go Award: Lennox Lewis - we could add Tyson and a host of others to this list.

JRR Tolkien Return of the King Award: James Toney. Very true

Orson Wells Award: Kirk ‘Blubber’ Johnson No arguments.

Captain Kirk ‘Set to Kill’ Award: Manny Pacquiao. Ricardo Mayorga would have been my pick had he not lost.

Dinner Show/Event of the Year: Pat Brogan’s April evening in Stoke, England which featured Marvin Hagler, John Conteh, Ernie Shavers and Ken Buchanan. Sounds good.

British Fighter of the Year: Michael Brodie. No, Ricky Hatton without doubt.

Right Up Their Own Arse Award: Ring Magazine and their ‘World Champions’. Disagree here, I like the ring world championship, for me it will eventually become more recognisable than the main belts.

Best Interviewee of the Year: Anthony Mundine (intelligent, opinionated engaging – loved speaking with him). Mundine has always sounded like a twat to me, from what I've heard its got to be Macrinelli - humble and intelligent.

Who Cares Award: Chris Byrd. Good call, although I'm sure US writers would award this to Johnny Nelson or Junior Witter.

Best Pre-Fight Smacktalker Award: Bernard Hopkins (who else?). No arguments, Kevin kelly is the only other possibility.

Sexiest Female Fighter: Regina Halmich. Yes, a very smart woman, although Ali and St John aren't bad looking.

Least Sexy Female Fighter: Derrick Gainer. How about the Pink Pounder?

Commentator of the Year: Ian Darke. No complaints

Most Over-hyped British Fighter of the Year: Alex ‘Oops’ Arthur. Yes, Matt Macklin is the only one close.

Most Annoying TV Personality: Wally ‘Noo Yalk’ Matthews. I go for Colonel Sheridan.

Best Colour Commentator/Analyst: Jim Watt and Larry Merchant. Yes, Barry McGuigan would be my pick (but I do love Jim aswell).

Most Predictable Supposed ‘Super-fight’ Ever Award: Ali v Martin, yes although Mayweather vs Ndou and Hopkins vs Joppy were pretty much how I expected them to be honest.

Card of the Year Award: Don King’s Back-to-Back-to-Back. Absolutely.

Scoop of the Year: Thomas Hauser and Barrera brain operation. Very good call.

Services to Boxing Award: Margaret Goodman. Ernie Fossey (R.I.P).

Most Wins in a Year Which Were Really Losses: Sven Ottke. I'd go for Moseley for this one.

Might Be World Heavyweight Champion in 2004: Juan Carlos Gomez. No Vitali Klitchko.
