ringsides slight on frank bruno.colin hart is such a tool
Sure our enery is the most popular british fighter of all time and rightly so. A man of tremendous class dignity and one of our last links to the golden british boxing days of the 50s and 60s.....but when johhny nelson who seems to have suddenly improved 300 percent asked him a great question in....has there been anyone who came close to emulating enery's popularity....hart was bemused and replied limply mcguigan.....oh really what about frank bruno......anyone who lived in the 80s and early 90s knows how loved frank was.....frank is definetly the most popular british fighter ever after henry cooper and than close behind ricky hatton....hatton had a distinctly northern appeal, henry and bruno were true icons in every region of our land.......mcguigan united ireland and was huge in britain but his hard nosed no nonsense punditry on sky the last 20 years has diminished his lovability....
Why is it people have forgotten frank bruno....is it due to the drugs and short term mental illness bruno had and the divorce etc.....i still think it stinks bruno deserves respect

Re: ringsides slight on frank bruno.colin hart is such a tool
Yeah. I'd like it if Colin Hart would stick to writing to be honest. He comes off as a bit of an unlikeable character whenever he's in front of a camera. Loved the way he tried to take credit for calling Henry Cooper a 'national treasure'. Takes a bit of a tool to try to score points in the aftermath of someone's death, regardless of whether he was being tongue in cheek or not.
His knowledge of the sport today seems to be really patchy too, and when he was doing colour commentary for allegedly.tv , just waffled on about old domestic fighters from years ago that were better than what he was currently watching in the ring. Very negative. Maybe his failure to mention Bruno (or perhaps even Hatton?) as a fighter similar in popularity to Cooper might just be down to his memory going with age.

It's simple, Cooper not only had bigger nads but was also a real person.mugabi wrote:Sure our enery is the most popular british fighter of all time and rightly so. Some people get runned up the wrong way with the whole "huh huh huh do ya know what a mean Arry?" stuff.
Re: ringsides slight on frank bruno.colin hart is such a tool

Can't even read his bit in the sun, totally stuck in the past really rubs me up the wrong way

Re: ringsides slight on frank bruno.colin hart is such a tool
I didn't see it, so not sure if they asked Colin to list in order. Off course Bruno should get mentioned - he might not ever have won BBC Sports Personaliy of the year - but he was in the top 3 a few times.
McGuigan was massive in his own right though, more popular globally than Bruno IMO. Loved by the Irish masses in the states and still proved to be popular by winning the hell kitchen thingy. I certainly don't think his commentary has hindered his popularity at all.
Eubank was worthy of a mention also, pantomine villan yes - but a massive star. Had his own reality show etc.

Re: ringsides slight on frank bruno.colin hart is such a tool
hart is so full of himself and with something to prove. he made an utter arsewhole of himself trying to score points with his "it was me who called enery a national treasure first in my column after his death"......yeah like the fornicating "sir" title given to him by her majesty didnt quite hit home the point, we needed old colin hart to clarify for us.
the worst bit was when asked to name a modern equivalent of henry cooper, hart actually said with a straight face "david beckham"! hahhaah the man is utterly pathetic!
the correct reply if he needed to mention a footballer might have been alan sharer, another cleancut family man and beloved son of his regional nation, but for ffs david beckham?

Not if the Alan Shearer rumours are true that have been on twitter.mugabi wrote:hart is so full of himself and with something to prove. he made an utter arsewhole of himself trying to score points with his "it was me who called enery a national treasure first in my column after his death"......yeah like the effing "sir" title given to him by her majesty didnt quite hit home the point, we needed old colin hart to clarify for us.

Re: ringsides slight on frank bruno.colin hart is such a tool
Before the Hatton Tsyzu fight when they were introducing old/retired boxers into the ring Bruno far and away got the biggest cheer of the night.
Re: ringsides slight on frank bruno.colin hart is such a tool
FFS this was a tribute to Cooper and it's a bit harsh most of the comment now is Bruno related. Granted, things could have come out better, but I thought the choice of Bob Mee to do the tribute and the choice of studio guests were good choices.

I remember on the Friday before Naz boxed Barrera, he wrote that this fight will confirm Naz's greatness, and that he is already there etc, but this will seal it. In Monday's edition, after Barrera had won, he wrote that Naz was a never was, who feasted upon poor opposition and was really never equiped to deal with someone of Barrera's calibre etc. This typifies Colin Hart to me.

As we've said time and again, Hart is stuck in the 50/60s
He is ignorant, a terrible writer and even worse on TV.
Hart is a joke and should be put out to pasture. Right place right time when he was younger - back then he had some kudos - but not any more.
He is GB's answer to Bert Sugar.

ffs your missing the point...the thread is about colin hart and how he is lacking as one of ringsides pundits. He gets his facts wrong and isnt the old historian of boxing he makes out.bfchunk wrote:FFS this was a tribute to Cooper and it's a bit harsh most of the comment now is Bruno related. On a side - speaking of shoddy work from Sky - Michael Sprott was continually labelled a EBU champion on Sky Sports News.

Didn't he win the EBU's EU championship once which technically would make him A EBU champion just not the one we would understand it to be.stujones wrote:On a side - speaking of shoddy work from Sky - Michael Sprott was continually labelled a EBU champion on Sky Sports News.
I could be wrong about the EU thing.
Re: ringsides slight on frank bruno.colin hart is such a tool
Yes, I think he won the EU, but the EU is completely seperate from the EBU. And pretty worthlessDavidPayne wrote:Didn't he win the EBU's EU championship once which technically would make him A EBU champion just not the one we would understand it to be.stujones wrote:On a side - speaking of shoddy work from Sky - Michael Sprott was continually labelled a EBU champion on Sky Sports News.

The EBU sanction the EU belt. It may be worthless but is not completely seperate.chinny wrote:Yes, I think he won the EU, but the EU is completely seperate from the EBU. I suppose it would be calling a former English/Scottish/Welsh champion a former British champion - mind you - nearly every single country that has professional boxing is part of the EU - another governing body making a grab for the lucre so why not have an EU title - every other fornicator is on it! ![[icon_witsend.gif] :witzend:](./images/smilies/icon_witsend.gif)

It'd be like saying he was a BBBofC champion if he'd been English Champion.Fat Git wrote:I suppose it would be calling a former English/Scottish/Welsh champion a former British champion - mind you - nearly every single country that has professional boxing is part of the EU - another governing body making a grab for the lucre so why not have an EU title - every other fornicator is on it! :witzend:

Well, given that Bruno was also a heavyweight - he's a pretty obvious choice.stujones wrote:I didn't see it, so not sure if they asked Colin to list in order. Off course Bruno should get mentioned - he might not ever have won BBC Sports Personaliy of the year - but he was in the top 3 a few times.

Thought Bob's voiceover was excellent, not strained or melodramatic in the least, and had no problem with the guests, though I did think it was a bit off of Harty, who I like and respect, to have bigged himself up in an obit. Bad call Col.bfchunk wrote:I thought the choice of Bob Mee to do the tribute and the choice of studio guests were good choices.
Re: ringsides slight on frank bruno.colin hart is such a tool
Hart always loves to tell everyone how he was "right all along".
When Pacman ko'd Hatton, he said something along the lines of "I said all along that Pacquiao could knock Hatton out as & when he pleased, and that's what happened".
When Calzaghe beat Manfredo, he said in commentary "this proves what I said all along, he does not belong in the ring with Joe Calzaghe".
(I'm sure there are more examples that escape me.)
Personally I can't stand people who say "I told you so".
