putting together an all time aussie p4p list
Very hard to do.....in my head the top three would be Darcy, Fenech and Rose. but im not sure what order to put them in as there is a case for each fighter to be no1 and also a case for them not to be.
after the top three it gets even harder trying to place guys like Harding, Sands, Currathers Caroll ect. and another issue is country of birth, can we put Tszyu and Darchinyan in OUR list, as im sure Russian fight fans will claim Tszyu and Armenians likewise with Drchinyan, and rightfully so, im sure if there was a really good Australian born fighter living and fighting overseas we would claim him. anyway anyone wanna have a crack at this?

Lionel at one, not because of his recent demise, but because he beat an all time great, at his best weight, in his backyard, and was undisputed ( something which rarely happens) plus I am 56 and remember the hype around him.
Not far behind must be
fenech, fammo ( who also beat a hall of famer at his best), curruthers, Darcy , griffo and, if we can accept him as one of ours, Vic and Kostya, these guys pick themselves really , then u have the unlucky ones who would have been champions today.
Sands, Tony mundine, ferreri , Thompson
Ones who are there abouts must be geale ( could end up in the top bracket)
mattioli, I used to train with Ricky day (WTF happened there)?
And how does Harding rate? I think top 10 somewhere.
Anyway we all have an opinion
would love to see some discussion

harding v briggs would have been one hell of a war
Re: putting together an all time aussie p4p list
Whenever I read the name Troy Waters it always occurs to me that there was a real chance he'd be talked about today as a special fighter, had he escaped the old man's mental ways
Re: putting together an all time aussie p4p list
Carruthers was the first Australian to win an undisputed title. Did it in one round in Toweel's home town. Did not lose a pro fight until he made an ill advised comeback when he was too old.
Re: putting together an all time aussie p4p list
I think Vic Patrick deserves to be in the top 5. He seems to be overlooked on this forum. He was a lightweight who mainly knocked out welterweights. I think he would have given the title holder a run for his money if he fought in America. He lost to American Fred Dawson who was a top fighter ( I think at one stage having a draw with the world champion of who I cannot remember). Another interesting side note is that Dawson traveled to Australia a few times, and never lost a fight! i think in like 20 or so fights down under.
Lets not forget Ron Richards, Ambrose Palmer and Fred Hanneberry these guys were fighting when Australia had depth and talent inside the ring, there is no shame that they lost a fair amount of fights. (Richards actually gave Archie Moore a really tough fight, I think even knocking him down... in his middle weight prime!!!)

Re: putting together an all time aussie p4p list
yeah a lot of the good fighters back then had what would seem to be know as a lot of losses, but they fought so often. And As as you said Trent there was more depth in Australian boxing back in the day so the competition was generally better.
