Warren and Boxing News
What's the upshoot of the story on the front page of this week's Boxing News, "Warren: You're Not Welcome"?
Warren's having a rant about an Abrams editorial and Gavin Evans article, then it says continued on page 18. I'm damned if I can find it on page 18 or anywhere else.
Has Warren banned BN from his future shows?

I personally wouldn't have thought such a decision has been made (SN banning Boxing news from shows). Mainly for 2 reasons.
1) Would boxing news have published such an article if SN are taking such a stance. Okay, page 18 is missing but I'm sure thats only in your copy.
2) There's a lack of ringside coverage enough as it is (with the lack of interest shown by the papers) I don't think making enemies of boxing news would be such a good idea for publicity. As the saying goes "turn on the press......"
Mearly my opinion though

Mmmm. It does happen a few times in both BM and BN - I'm sure there is nothing to read into it - just a Christman error in printing, quite common I'm sure.KOJOE90 wrote:I cant find the second part of the allegedly article on page 18 either.
I think the next edition will be quite interesting, I except some kind of appology if the page missing is in every edition.

i went up the newsagents yesterday and wanted the xmas edition cos i didn't get it at the time, and it was this weeks issue they had, but i didn't realise that until i got home :x so i don't know if he's kept the xmas issue for me, i hope so.
and yeah and there's no follow up to the letter on page 18 on my one either, printing error there methinks.
w*rren needs to get out more and stop moaning, evans makes some good points.
calzaghe didn't become a star when he was on the beeb because he was only boxing at domestic level and lets face it has never been someone who has huge charisma anyway.
he's wrong about lennox lewis he's trying to make out lewis didn't become a star on terrestrial tv, well i would beg to differ lewis had a lot of attention from the daily papers back then who paid more interest in boxing plus he had that big fight with gary mason that made him quite a big name and people then began to take notice, plus he was a heavyweight so more attention is guaranteed. and by the way i have 2 of lennox lewis' first 4 fights so that isn't true either and both itv commentary
again he's trying to say prince naseem hamed wasn't a big name before he went to sky rubbish naz particularly towards the end of his itv years was starting to mix in higher class and get more attention and definitely becoming a well known celebrity, e.g. naz gave analysis on benn-mclellan and then the commentator said naz will be fighting next week and 15m people watched that benn-mclellan fight so thats being beamed into all those homes so that would have raised awareness for a start. and then saying his career really took off in america when he went to sky what do u expect he was mixing in higher class by that time so u would expect the yanks to be sniffing around.
evans is right about ITV effectively throwing in the towel the word to look out for in that sentence is "effectively" evans is right apart from one or two fights that w*rren rightly mentions, itv did effectively give up on boxing.
and then nigel benn, every big name fighter he lists there benn fought when he wasn't even with w*rren is it me or is w*rren trying to take credit for making barkley, de witt, eubank, watson etc it seems that way, the only name he mentions that he promoted is henry wharton now if he's a big big name then so am i

the second half of the letter was a lot more convincing than the 1st half but i still thought he suited his own argument a bit too much
firstly he slags off the sanctioning bodies and then when defending some of ricky hatton's opponents he mentions they were wbc rated 8) you've just slagged the wbc rotten and now u care about there ratings :x
and to say the wbo is the best organisation because they haven't had an investigation against them is ridiculous
has he looked at there ratings recently, we all know apart from one or two exceptions the wbo is 2nd tier and the best champions tend to have wbc wba and ibf titles.
then he talks about danny williams, the reason he didn't become a star is cos he hasn't got the personality, and he didn't deliver
he forgot to mention that the time he fought on a big bill out in germany he was hammered.
then he says robin reid isn't as well known as joe calzaghe i'd challenge him on that one i reckon more people would know who robin reid is than joe calzaghe.
then he says it was bad for damaen kelly to go for a genuine world title least he had the chance to find out how good he was, unlike a lot of franky boys fighters who just go on defending there wbo, wbu baubles and never get to find out, kelly got to find out that he wasn't good enuff at least he'll always know.
to say the BN is biased is well over the top for me there always fair and don't take sides just give there opinions, to put it in words "its pathetic"

Yes, I have read the letter and without reading the offending article I can see why Warren is annoyed. Yes, it showed poor research of course Calzaghe was on terrestial TV. Yes, ITV did make a "1st comeback" with Shea Neary, Peter Culshaw, Colin Dunne etc - they also showed some international fights on delayed basis that Warren didn't mention during this run (including DLH vs Henandez).
I could only find one fault with Warren's reply, the BBC did show some of Lewis' earlier contest I remeber his fights with Andrew Gerrard and Dan Murphy on Grandstand. Lewis faught Chanet and Mason on the BBC, then faught Weaver and McCory on ITV.
Lewis's exclusive deal with Sky began with Biggs, I remeber the exposure he got on terrestial TV (in adverts that he is exclusive to Sky) got him more coverage than probably these early fights.

Warren seems to be upsetting and arguing with a lot of folks lately, do you think he might get the hint that it's him?

I think to call Pachecco vs Kelly a mis match was a bit much, Kelly was ranked as high as 6th on a few independent rankings. I'm sure Kelly would have prefered better preperation, but his performance showed he was worthy of the shot.
I think there have been some far worse mismatch involving Britains and world class operators in recent times. Walker vs Karmazin was a mismatch, as was Clarke vs Vargas.

I do think that there is a slightly nostalgic harking back to the great days of terrestrial boxers, I have been guilty of it myself.
The truth is, that fighters, although perhaps not as well known to the average guy on the street, make a hell of a lot more money for less risk than they did back in the days when boxing was a mainstay of terrestrial programming.
Another problem not highlighted in Warren's article, is that commercial sponsors won't touch boxing with a bargepole, because of it's poor image, and that is not just as a result of poor administration, it's because there are not many products which want to be associated with a sport where people punch eachother in the head.
Without commercial sponsorship, it's going to be very difficult for the BBC or ITV to justify spending vast sums on live title fights, as it's virtually impossible for them to recoup the money spent.
With the immense pressure on terrestrial channels to cover football, which requires the expenditure of huge sums of money, boxing seems unlikely to me to ever make much of a comeback on normal tv, the best we can hope for is the occasional major domestic clash, and world title fights on delayed telecast. That's not too bad, anyone with a video recorder can benefit.
It's hard to see how boxing can 'go mainstream' in todays market, it just doesn't seem to have the right profile to be a major player in the way that football is. Perhaps this could be improved, but I don't know whether it's ever going to be able to get even near being on a par with football as a global sport.

In England perhaps (although to be honest I doubt that) Reid couldn't sell out his own front room, never mind top a bill - so how you think he's more famous than Calzaghe I have no idea - Calzaghe that has consistently drawn 6-12,000 fans to his defences for over two years now!
JC has been Welsh Sports Personality of the Year don't forget and an established "World" champ for a good long while.
As far as the BBC?SN stuff is concerned - I feel it's simple - all competition is a good thing IMO.
