Don't write off Mundine, just because he was stopped by a light puncher like Ottke he is not as unresilient as we may suspect, it was his first fight at that level and he was also feeling drained apparently by the 10th having got through a lot of work on the outside. He paced himself a lot better against a hard puncher in Echols and comfortably boxed himself to victory. This fight may not be a forgone conclusion despite Green's power.

Good points! I think its safe to say that Echols hits harder than Ottke - and Mundine took his punches.

Mean Machine Green for me in this one - looks a monster and might punch too hard for the fragile Mundine.
He led the one paced Echols a dance, but Green will be all over him like a cheap suit.

Green said of his bitter rival recently, "Mundine is an expert of dogging it and quitting".
But Tony Mundine, Anthony's father and trainer, suggested there wasn't any immediate prospect of his son and Green fighting and felt both men would be better served by strengthening their position in their respective divisions, in which both are considered secondary champions by some pundits. "I just believe Danny Green should go for the WBC and look after himself and Anthony Mundine goes for the WBA and looks after himself and let them just go along and earn some dollars," Tony Mundine said.
That probably makes sense for now, but it would be nice to see them get together down the line.
Green, who won his interim title less than two weeks ago, is still nursing a sore right hand following his victory over Canadian Eric Lucas in Montreal.
"We're just waiting to see if the swelling goes down, but hopefully it won't be too major," Green's trainer, former triple world champion Jeff Fenech, said.

It does make sense for Oz to go for two world champs instead of just one - like Dad says make some cash in the meantime.
If they both make some good defences ( and Green beats Beyer - but I doubt the Germans are too thrilled about rematch ) it will build into a multi million dollar fight down under.

Joe Calzaghe suddenly has some exciting competition, which beats a Sven Ottke fight.

He certainly does mate! Green, Mundine, Lacy and possibly even Mads Larsen (his fights with Ottke and Haussler suggest a tough nights work for Joe IMO) mean that if Calzaghe moves to Light Heavyweight he will be avoiding a number of meaningful matchups, throw in Ottke, Haussler, Beyer, Lucas etc and his claims to have cleaned up at SM and have "Nothing left to prove" will look even hollower.

green vs mundine

Post by JW »

have to agree about the hollow statement.almost borders on disrespect
and arrogance.really think supermiddleweight div is going to be a very exciting one in 2004.i hope calzaghe does stay at supermiddle coz i think his presence only increases the excitement. that said if he does go up a division how will he cope?????
as for mundine vs green.dont think it will happen in 2004.assuming they
both keep winning(and mundine isn't assassinated by an understandably
angry american) reckon early 2005.result-green ko/tko.while i felt mundine did do a good job vs echols i just cannot see him doing the same versus that very mean green lad.danny is just too much of a pitbull.the
only chance imo mundine has is if green goes for glory early and punches himself out.suppose need to see him do a few more rounds before can actually say anything with regards to stamnina. just honestly feel green only needs one punch and unlike echols he will land it.echols did get
mundine a few times but they were all to the side of the head and if my memory serves me correct alot seemed to land on his gloves.i cannot
remember echols landing one good straight punch.when he did land anything mundine grabbed or ran. i am pretty sure if the fight does happen fenech will have something to say regarding excessive clinching
prior to the fight to try perhaps negate mundines tactics which i think would have to be much the same as versus echols.i think mundine was a bit lucky to nothave been at least warned versus echols.and i think jeff will make a big point of that prefight.
just as a matter of nterest-what do you guys think would be the result of an ecols green fight. imo green would ko him but it would be a big test and could possibly give an absolute answer re dannys chin.potentially a very brutal fight.

Although Green and Ecchols have similar power, Green throws short straight punches and Eccols throws wide looping punches there's no comparison. Eccols never attacked Mundines body and Green is a vicous body puncher.
