Name Dropping

I find a lot of people name drop on here. Why do people feel the need to name drop all the time or talk about their good friend David Haye / Ricky Hatton or whoever?

Next time, I am going to write "I was cooking a roast dinner on Sunday and Floyd Mayweather, Ricky Hatton and Joe Calzaghe walked past so I invited them all in for dinner".

This applies to the non pro-trainers and boxers of course. I reckon some people tell a few porkies on here.

I've only ever met Antonio Tarver at the Froch Vs Dirrell fight and Michael Sprott because he goes to the same gym as me when I am back in the UK! I find it somewhat incomprehensible how the average fan can know all these boxers?

ha-ha Not at all. Tarver was about 5 metres away so I said hello and had a picture!

I didn't go up to Sprott and say hi. I just said "How long are you going to be on the bench press mate?" Apparently he is a really nice bloke.

It does not happen a lot. Some of us non famous fans have been around gyms and Boxing a while so of course you will build up some sort of relationship with fighters, they are only human you know. My arch rival GOmez is the main culprit on about Froch but to be fair he is obviously his mate and adds interesting insights into certain things, he doesnt just say "whoah i know Carl Froch!". The only name i have ever mentioned on here is Henry Wharton but i have known him all my life and his brother is my best pal. Its hardly name dropping when someone wants to know something that you know the answer to because you have the inside track, or were indeed there. Oh, while im at it, can i drop the name of one of my best boxing buddies Graham Fearn, i know he will be pleased!

I don't mind it usually, there are only a handful of culprits. Most people use their contacts to the benefit of the forum. There are more annoying things, such as inane threads.

I completely agree everyone seems to drop big names into conversations, but I bet no one has ever met Bruce Woodcock, well I have!

They would be pretty crap coversations on a Boxing forum if big names didnt come into every conversation. Who else can we talk about, our mates?

Jack Dempsey and Stanley Ketchel were round mine last night watching Prizefighter.

Ketch got bored after the first Witter fight and started doing the ironing.

Boxers are normal people with normal friends and family.
The people on here are posting from all over the world never mind all over britain.
How can it be so hard to understand that someone could be training in the same gym as a well known name?
You think that these boxers go into gyms and dont socialise or dont live on the same street as other people? Hatton for example, you think all the people in the boozer he's spent half his life in wont know him on a personal level?
Obviously some people might talk nonsense aswell but i dont think its a big deal on here.

I think .... if i remember rightly , that he runs carls official webpage , something like that .

one of Carls closest friends trains at the gym i attend but dont think ive had one single conversation about him with that particular guy , so does his brother occasionally , Lee froch , Who also was the master of ceromonies at our recent white collar show , is that classed as name dropping

What other sports would you get the interaction you get on here between the sportsperson and the fan?
No harm in the name dropping its nice to get some stories and reactions from other means than a press release.
BTW Al Bernstein read the Commentary thread and said he got the impression Watt wasnt terribly keen on Froch...

This isn't a forum like you get in football. A lot of people on here have been in and around the game for years and do actually know a lot of boxers.

For all his criticism Spud is very well connected. Eric Guy does know most boxers in the south of England. Gomez is a long time friend of Carl Froch etc etc. So, obviously, when we get fanboy rants from posters on here about certain fighters, people on here will speak up because they know the person mentioned in reality. They are not boasting, just stating facts.

Spud may have done but then Spud 'networked' and while most of us laughed at his expense, he did get headhunted
by the heavyweight champion of the world. That is 10 out of 10 for pure brilliance as I bet Muhammad Ali didn't headhunt
Bundini Brown.

And give Spud due here - he is the one who got a lot of the pro boxing community to come on to forums such
as these by telling them about us. Fair play to him! When he does come back, I am really looking forward to reading about his
tales and experiences!
