WBU super-featherweight champion Kevin Lear has been forced to postpone his ring return after a doctor warned him he could become a cripple in later life if he went ahead.
Lear was due to fight for the first time in 18 months at York Hall on February 7 against Anthony Hanna, then defend his title against the man he won it from, Michael Gomez, but instead has been forced to rest up again with a shoulder injury that has plagued him since his amateur days.
"A doctor thinks he runs the risk of becoming a cripple later in life if he comes back to soon," said trainer Johnny Eames.
"I know Gomez will say that Kevin is running from him, but it's simply not true."
Gomez had intended to relinquish his British super-featherweight title to concentrate on their rematch, but this throws a spanner in the works. Alex Arthur will also be disappointed. He was hoping to resurrect his career in a "gimmee" for the British title vacated by Gomez against former ABA champion Henry Castle, who is 9-2 as a pro and has been boxing at featherweight.

Hope he can recover. Terrible if his career is ruined because of this, but you all saw what happened to Dean Francis once he'd dislocated his shoulder. It was never the same again (and yes I know he also ended up in the clink).

Although Lear's condition is not a dislocation, a shoulder injury is very hard to return from. I mean, Buddy McGirt, despite going on to beat Simon Brown for the IBF welterweight title, was never the same once he'd torn his rotator cuff.

After Buddy torn his rotor cuff he fought the remainder of his career without the ability to throw a left hook. Only true ring masters such as McGirt can overcome such a disadvantage.

His fight against a weight weakened Brown was a boxing clinic.
